The frozen conditions of the Altai region of Siberia preserved the contents of the barrow tombs which were first excavated at Pazyryk in 1929, and later by the author from 1947-1949. In addition to metal and ceramic materials they discovered mummified bodies and finely decorated leather and textiles and carved wooden artifacts reflecting the life of the people and their horses. Vladimir Rott was born an Hungarian citizen in the Soviet Union where his father Ferenc Roth was contracted to develop a lumber mill at Bobyrusk in Belasrus.Vladimir was 3 when his father was arrested and banished him to Siberia, to Kolyma, where in the horrors of the labor camps he spent 2 years and from where he never returned.These are the letters that they received from Siberia. Total of 178 pages, half English/half German. Black and white sketches. Author was born in 1909 in the Ukraine and imprisoned by the Russians in 1946. She survived years of confinement, made her way to Canada, and was encouraged to document her story in this book. Above-average wear and soiling. Unmarked. Binding intact.
