Thiulen, nacido en Estocolmo, aparece en Cádiz en fecha incierta desarrollando actividades comerciales. Aprende español, y entra en contacto con jesuítas mejicanos expulsos que pasan por la ciudad camino de Italia y a los que se une, abjura del luteranismo, ingresa en la Compañía, llega a ser teólogo consultor del obispado de Fano, y publica escritos en italiano que él mismo traduce al español. Este es el caso del presente libro, aparecido por vez primera en Venecia, 1799. La traducción española alcanzó un éxito considerable, del que dan fe cinco reediciones distintas en torno a 1823, coincidiendo con la reacción absolutista de aquel año. Un sueco en la batalla de "diccionarios" y "vocabularios" emprendida por los defensores peninsulares del "Trono y del Altar". Los raros caminos de la providencia.
