Fine English Original cloth bdg. with Russian Cyrillic lettered gilt on cloth's spine and board. Five compartments on spine; one 'pawn', one 'bishop' and one 'king' gilt on three, half-title and a traditional illustration on other two compartments. 12mo. (15 x 12 cm). In Russian. 214, [2] p., classical b/w diagrams. First Edition. Extremey rare. Matç-revans: Alehin - Euwe. Na pervenstvo mira, (Oktyabr - Dekayabr, 1937 r.). The 1937 World Chess Championship was played between Max Euwe and Alexander Alekhine in the Netherlands from October 5 to December 4, 1937. Alekhine regained his title. This was the last "Imperial" World Championship where the world champion had control of the title and could set match conditions; Alekhine died in 1946 and FIDE stepped in to take control of the World Championship. Alexander Alekhine challenged Max Euwe to a rematch, and Euwe agreed to the challenge and the conditions. From October to December in 1937 the match was conducted, again in the Netherlands. If Alekhine had made the mistake of underestimating Euwe in 1935, he certainly did not underestimate him this time. Euwe won the first game with the white pieces, but in the end Alekhine's resolve (perhaps fueled by the 1935 defeat) proved to be too much for the Dutch Champion. After 25 games, with a score of +10 -4 =11, Alekhine gained the title for the second time. This was Alekhine's final title match. He held the title of World Chess Champion until his death in 1946. Mikhail Moiseyevich Botvinnik, (1911-1995) was a Soviet and Russian International Grandmaster and three-time World Chess Champion, widely considered one of the greatest chess players of all time. Working as an electrical engineer and computer scientist at the same time, he was one of the very few professional chess players who achieved distinction in another career while playing top-class competitive chess. He was also a pioneer of computer chess. Botvinnik was the first world-class player to develop within the Soviet Union, putting him under political pressure but also giving him considerable influence within Soviet chess. From time to time he was accused of using that influence to his own advantage, but the evidence is unclear and some suggest he resisted attempts by Soviet officials to intimidate some of his rivals. Botvinnik also played a major role in the organization of chess, making a significant contribution to the design of the World Chess Championship system after World War II and becoming a leading member of the coaching system that enabled the Soviet Union to dominate top-class chess during that time. His famous pupils include World Champions Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik.
Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Modern very decorated full leather bdg. Tear and missing on imprint page; also first two pages, however only two words are missing, slightly toned on pages. Foolscap 8vo. (17,5 x 11,5 cm). In Ottoman script and Armenian. [8], 94 p. Talîm-i lisân-i Ermeni. The Tanzimat reforms from 1839 stimulated Armenian cultural activity in Constantinople and the port city of Smyrna (now, Izmir). The number of Armenian titles printed in the Ottoman capital grew exponentially throughout the next few decades. By the mid-nineteenth century Constantinople had regained its status as "the World Capital of the Armenian Book" for a new span of 40 years. Thereafter, the fortunes of Armenian book publishing in Constantinople became hostage to political developments in the Ottoman Empire. Armenian printing stagnated during the repressive regime of Sultan Abdülhamid II, but rebounded immediately after the 1908 Revolution. It almost ground to a halt during the First World War, yet it was rejuvenated immediately after the Ottoman defeat. After Constantinople (renamed Istanbul in 1930) was integrated into the Turkish Republic established by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Armenian cultural freedoms were curtailed, the total number of Armenian books published declined, although the city still remains an important center of Armenian-language book printing outside Armenia. This is a small and extremely rare Armenian linguistic book printed for the Ottoman / Turkish learners. OCLC: 1004312309 / 780182928.; Özege 19657. First and Only Edition.

VOL. 1: Based on the historical data offered by 750 postcards published in 1900-1914 era, this book illustrates the story of the Armenians who lived in the borders of modern Turkey at the beginning of the 20th century. The cities, towns, villages and districts inhabited by Armenians, their role in the Ottoman economical and social life, their churches, schools and monasteries along with the papers and periodicals published by Armenians are displayed through a research using, for the first time, the Armenian, Turkish and western sources. The exhibition became one of the most visited § exhibitions in recent years and was later held in several cities abroad including Frankfurt, Paris, Geneva, London and Yerevan. Now, by publishing this second volume of the book, we again look at the life of Armenians who lived in these lands a hundred years ago in the company 900 additional postcards. The majority of the postcards were issued between 1900 and 1914, and they show the cities, quarters and villages in which Armenians lived, and the Armenian churches, monasteries, schools and firms or the missionary establishments founded for Armenians. In the book there are a great deal of postcards produced or photographed by an Armenian, posted to or by an Armenian and bearing Armenian writings or the cachets of the sender or a related establishment.
