Cité grecque avant d’être un port romain, elle est devenue une forteresse byzantine, puis une ville ottomane. Terminus de la caravane d’Iran au XVIIe siècle elle deviendra un port d’exportation de produits agricoles un siècle plus tard, pour devenir au XIXe siècle la ville la plus dynamique de l’Empire ottoman. C’est à Smyrne que verra le jour la presse ottomane ainsi que la première ligne de chemin de fer de l’Empire.
