Barritt stamped Barritt and Co. at foot of one of the blank preliminary leaves in purple morocco over bevelled boards. Housed in a black morocco box. Covers constructed of raised and sunk panels tooled in blind with small gilt roundels. At centre of upper cover the Sacred Monogram IHS in gilded metal has been laid on. Spine with five raised bands compartments tooled in blind and gilt roundels second compartment lettered in gilt. Gilded metal clasp in the shape of a cross catch has broken so it does lock but otherwise the clasp is all present. All edges gilt with intricate gauffering. Gilt turn-ins marbled endpapers. The borders of the pages are coloured bright blue so that with the leaves fanned as when looking at a fore-edge painting the gilt gauffering disappears and a vivid blue emerges. P." one printed on unusual silvered paper or silver of a man delivering milk in a town numbered "55" and a colored print of the same image unnumbered in colored woodblock. Over 20 pages of newspaper clippings carefully mounted on folio sheets 13 1/2 x 11 1/2" discussing milk adulteration milk famine etc. Newspapers clipped include the Daily Telegraph and Fun great name for a newspaper. Edges a little ruffled & musty. Overall a very interesting collection impossible to recreate. unknown

Very Good plus.<br /> <br /> The Society founded in 1863 published numerous articles supporting the Union emancipation and victory. Its folio broadsides are far scarcer than the octavo imprints of the Loyal Publication Society in Philadelphia.<br /> The first of several articles reports on the stunning election results in Pennsylvania and Ohio: "The people of this country-- the great democratic masses-- without regard to parties or prejudices are determined to maintain their government in all its integrity and strength. Both the peace men of the North and the war men of the South received a stunning blow yesterday." In Ohio the traitor Vallandigham "has been beaten by an unprecedented majority." And in Pennsylvania the Copperhead Woodward has been repudiated. An unusual advertisement for a penmanship instructor a Mr. Chadbourn announcing the opening of his academy on September 15 1857 in Wolfborough New Hampshire. The broadside states “Inspired with the confidence of more than five years experience as a Teacher of Writing now offers to the Ladies and Gentlemen of Wolfborough his universally admired system of Penmanship which for beauty of style ease of acquisition rapidity of execution and ready adaptation to the wants of business and private correspondence stands unrivalled by any system extant.†An interesting relic from the middle of the Bleeding Kansas period which would serve as a harbinger for the bloodiness of the American Civil War. A very good example with a chip with loss to upper corner and some toning to head but attractive and well preserved. Unrecorded in OCLC. unknown

Housed in a very nice felt-lined cloth folding box with red morocco back gilt lettering. For the binding: Ramsden p. 144. A little soiling to leather and a couple of trivial imperfections internally but a very fine copy inside and out.<br/> <br/> This pretty little prayer book is a lovely example of provincial English bookbinding and very typical of an era in which such luxurious volumes were popular gifts among the moneyed classes. The Russell firm is recorded by Ramsden as operating in Guildford in southern England and the ticket in the present book notes that they were also booksellers stationers printers cutlers and silversmiths in addition to binders. All page edges gauffered. A little wear at the top and bottom of the hinges. A very attractive binding with light wear. Contained in black leather slipcase in very good condition. Slipcase repaired and lined with cloth. An extraordinary Victorian Book of Common Prayer in an unusually nice contemporary velvet and metal binding with clasps. Samuel May was elected President of the Convention which asserts that Slavery "ought to be immediately abolished." Laws prohibit teaching slaves to read distributing the Bible to them or "the preaching of the Gospel" bar them from acting as witnesses. "Their persons and their lives are left totally to the absolute control of their masters." Reports are presented on Slavery in the District of Columbia the progress or lack thereof of the anti-slavery cause the Slave Trade with many examples of the horrors of Slavery. Originally published in New York by Charles Wiley re-printed in London by Sir Richard Phillips & Co. Published the same year as the first US edition. A collection of twenty-three letters supposedly written by an American from New England during their travels through England and Wales. Written as a satirical retort to the unflattering accounts of British writers with regard to the new American republic over the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century criticising English customs and social life in comparison with the US. Written by "A New England Man" or James Kirke Paulding an American writer known for his violently anti-British views. He was also the United States Secretary of the Navy for a time. Bound in contemporary paper covered boards. Externally very smart with light shelf wear only. Internally firmly bound. Original full very dark maroon gilt-stamped morocco all edges gilt gilt inner dentelles cream endsheets. Both volumes are within a maroon full-leather slipcase with draw-string. A note suggests the box is later made however the same note states that the fore-edge paintings are early and they are clearly not early. All-in-all a handsome set very nicely preserved. Fine. With two fore-edge paintings called "Village Church scenes". The bookseller's note referencing this item suggests that these fore-edge paintings were from 1844. This supports buyers thinking that an item is something which it isn't – a huge problem with fore-edge painted books. What is their true history and how does one know it It is natural to ask what evidence is there for taking a position on an item like this. The fore-edge paintings offered here are likely dated to the 1990s. These are not 19th century images. / What do you suppose is far more likely to be true: that an item in front of you is new or that it is old If it is 'new' then how do you know What if it is old Be aware that a true fore-edge painted specimen of any early date say 1780 or 1802 – is quite rare – especially when compared to the overwhelming number of 20th century specimens and especially specimens that are fresh – new – not even as old as the internet! What is the evidence It is often thought that early provenance implies that a book has a fore-edge painting when it is a thing inscribed to a lover perhaps a bride or a close friend. Some fore-edge paintings have been made and inscribed thus but they are very rare. What is common is an item that is new. / A charming piece as its condition including the case are perfectly kept and clean. Very scarce. <br/><br/>Attracted by the ideals of the "Declaration of Independence" Fanny Wright traveled extensively through the U.S.A. tracking how those ideals were being realized. In France who became almost like a daughter to Gen. Lafayette. She and her sister returned to America and with Lafayette were guests of Jefferson at Monticello. Later as a U.S. citizen she founded the Nashoba commune in Tennessee in anticipation of emancipation. She visited New York and Philadelphia West Point Niagara Falls Lake Errie and on to Lower Canada Montreal Lake Champlain Burlington Vermont Washington D.C. to Virginia with many observations along the way. This edition has a dedication to Lafayette by the translator who also supplied a new translation. Vol. 1 ends with remarks upon Morris Birkbeck's letters about the Illinois country. All in all Fanny Wright became one of the most remarkable women of the first half of the 19th century: among other accomplishments being the first woman to write this work the first travelogue by a woman. The Great Exhibition was organized by Henry Cole and Prince Albert husband of the reigning monarch Queen Victoria. It was attended by numerous notable figures of the time including Charles Darwin Samuel Colt members of the Orléanist Royal Family and the writers Charlotte Brontë Charles Dickens Lewis Carroll George Eliot and Alfred Tennyson. Music for the opening was under the direction of Sir George Thomas Smart and the continuous music from the exhibited organs for the Queen's procession was "under the superintendence of William Sterndale Bennett".
