196141436np 1961. Near fine. Album belonging to Sergeant John A. England United States Army from his 1960 trans-Pacific cruise aboard the U.S.N.S. General Edwin D. Patrick a WWII-era transport ship based out of San Francisco. A contingent from the Republic of Korea Navy was aboard and the album focuses heavily on the Korean sailors and their interactions with American servicemen. A brilliant hand-painted title illustration in acrylic titled 'ROK NAVY' and two additional vignette works in the same medium illuminate the album. The images are clear and well composed creating a significant record of U.S.-Korean relations and of the Edwin D. Patrick which was the longest surviving of the P2 carriers in the U.S. fleet launched in 1945 decommissioned in 1968 and sent to scrap in 2010. Hardcover. Oblong folio commercial album measuring approximately 10.5" x 14.5". Green faux-leather covered boards string bound. 24 card leaves 21 with 77 black and white snapshot photographs each measuring approximately 5" x 3.5" recto mounted loosely in corners. Final 3 leaves blank an additional 3 photographs laid-in; 80 prints total. Hand-painted title illustration to first endpaper two vignette scenes on first and fourth leaves. Mild edge wear to album exterior otherwise generally near fine. hardcover

Evidently much used and bearing marks of adaptations to liturgical practice throughout inc. pencil annots tipped-in and loose typescript additions and substitutions many typed in red & black; some covering original text. Final 4 blank endpages have tipped-in 'Supplement of Masses of the English Martyrs'. Considerable use-wear to Order and Canon of the Mass with tape reinforcement now yellowed to 6pp. pencil & pen annots and many tipped-in substitutions and additions inc. replacement of vernacular Communion Rite with Latin 'Haec commixtio' . Professionally matted and framed with a vintage postcard photograph of him in military uniform; including original mailing envelope.<br /><br />To his friend Rodolph Algernon "John" Perssé whom he had met while at Magdalen College Oxford. Perssé was a scion of an Irish aristocratic family; he was killed in action during the first World War on January 1 1915. <br /><br />Edward acceded to the throne on January 20 1936 and abdicated on December 1936 making him the British monarch with the shortest ever reign. <br /><br />He was never actually crowned

Album has dark colored soft padded leather covers with "Autographs" signed in gilt on the front cover. Leather dentelles inside. Decorative end sheets. The right front end sheet was mostly removed. Repaired. New dark blue mulberry paper spine added. Front and rear hinges repaired with tissue. The owner worked as a Nurse in the hospital ward at 40 Stationary Hospital Harfluer France and at Ward 8 St. John Military Hosp. Woking Surrey. Her inscription is written on the front paste down - "Miss Ethel E. J. Clarke "The Grove" 41 Moore St. Worcester." 56 pages of this album were used for original art inscriptions autographs and verse. 27 of the pages have illustrated with original art. One page has a cut out racist cartoon character of black children. Another page has a photograph of a soldier in uniform. The majority of the inscriptions and art work are dated 1918 and 1919. A handful of 1924 inscriptions located towards the back. No other dates recorded. Several inscriptions from soldiers include their home place and regimental unit inside. FIRST EDITION AND A VERY PLEASING SET ESPECIALLY WELL PRESERVED. The author notes that this is the first book to be produced which addresses itself to the Old Inns and their story. The author took great delight in planning the work and executing it over a ten year period. He addresses himself to the last of the London Inns most of which were long gone by the time the work was published. The journey seems to have been delightful for the author the mapping out of England into tours with inns strung like beads upon the itinerary and after five thousand miles of travel two volumes written and published into being.
