39 numbered leaves, printed on the recto only + Armorial Frontis on engraving paper + very large folding genealogical chart. 4to. 310 mm. All edges gold gilt. Original crimson full cloth over beveled boards binding. The boards and spine are decorated with gilt strap designs. Corners worn. Edward E. Salisbury (1814-1901), by permission, gathered this valuable information from the archives of the New Haven Colony Historical Society, and, after some revision, had it privately printed in April 1876. The most famous early member of the family was Giovanni Diodati or Deodati (1576-1649), a Swiss theologian and translator. He was the first person to translate the Bible into Italian from Hebrew and Greek sources. He was born at Geneva, of a noble family originally from Lucca which had been exiled on account of its Protestantism. John Milton supposedly vacationed at the Villa Diodati in 1639. In 1816 it was the summer residence of Lord Byron, Mary Shelley, Percy Shelley, John Polidori and others - and thus the first home of Frankenstein and The Vampyre. Hardbound. Very good. Arthur George Tansley (1871-1955), English botanist, a pioneer in the science of plant ecology. He coordinated a large project to map the vegetation of the British Isles. In this work Tansley showed how vegetation is affected by soil, climate, the presence of wild and domesticated animals, previous land management, and contemporary human activities. He also reviewed all known accounts of British flora and then linked the two themes, thereby demonstrating which factors are important in influencing the various types of vegetation. It answers questions such as "How do you score a joust?," (p. 125) "When did feral wolves become extinct in Britain?," (p. 12) and "How much do you pay the piper?" (p. 164) And what is Shakespeare talking about when he mentions Shove-Groat (p. 242) or Nine Men's Morris (p. 256)? (The modern equivalents are shuffleboard and tic-tac-toe). Included are numerous quotes from original documents and dozens of plates based on period illustrations.
