The memorialists state "A few years ago a deaf and dumb person was considered non compos mentis in law and incapable of exercising the rights or duties of a citizen. The degree of knowledge to which some individuals of this description have lately attained would have been incredible had we not witnessed it. Board edges are a little rubbed and leading corners bumped. All fore edges are tipped in gilt with decorative tooling. 4 very minor contempory japanese paper repairs to page edges not affecting text. I can only find one very light pencil inscription on the verso of the title page. Pages are lightly tanned and some very minor soiling to some pages but for a 214 year old book she is in much better condition than most modern books. <br/> <br/> Oxford.
