14098Bank of England: 28 August 1852. Sent from the Bank of England on 28 August 1852. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In poor condition with a section torn away from the foot of both leaves with loss of text including the writer's signature. The letter begins: 'Dear Sir When you receive this your Press &c. will be well on its way to Edinburgh. When it arrives do not attempt to take it out of its case but have the case placed upon a Table and take it to pieces from about the machine leaving the machine standing upon the bottom of the Case - until its own bench is made when you will push the machine with its mahogany board in upon it.' He discusses the machines at the Stamp Office and goes into technical detail pin die and rollers. The letter concludes: 'There is also a small key hanging on one of the Guide Springs for unlocking the slide for disconnecting the Register. The spine has four false raised bands with gilt decoration and additional gilt decoration at the head and tail of the spine. Spine also has gilt title "Chapel Services". Owner's name in gilt to front cover. Very light shelf wear to edges and corners. King's Chapel is the oldest church in America with continuous weekly worship services. Its liturgy is a unique hybrid that reflects this history largely based upon the 1662 English Book of Common Prayer . Spine ends chipped and extremities lightly worn. Front cover professionally reattached with reversible Japanese tissue. An clean and attractive copy of this extremely rare proof copy of the Evangelical proposal for revision of the English BCP. During the last half of the 19th Century there was resurgence of Anglo-Catholic practice in the Church of England. Some clergy incorporated liturgical forms from the medieval Sarum rite or contemporary Roman Catholic rites and several Anglo-Catholic devotionals were published for use by Anglo-Catholic clergy. In response several Evangelicals proposed reforms to the Book of Common Prayer. A Royal Commission on Ritual was appointed in 1867 which produced four reports over the following three years.
