A first edition of this scarce biographical account of important Irish preacher Arthur O'Leary. Arthur O'Leary 1729-1802 was an Irish preacher and polemical writer. He wrote numerous tracts all expressing faith in religion and the Crown. O'Leary was particularly distressed at the Dechristianisation of France during the Revolution. His works included 'Essay on Toleration' 'Loyalty Asserted of the Test Oath Vindicated'. He was also a wit and built the original St. Patricks' Church Soho Square.Written by Thomas R. England.Illustrated with a frontispiece of the subject.The first and only edition of this scarce work. In a half calf binding. Externally a trifle rubbed to the spine and extremities with a little rubbing to the front joint. Internally firmly bound. Pages are a little spotted to the early and later leaves. He thinks that Rickards 'could answer the question in the enclosed letter with much more authority exactness and detail than I could.' If Rickards has 'anything to say on the subject' Mozley asks him to 'send it at once to my brother at Oxford as he is in the last crisis of an article on the Manuscript Commission'. Docketed on the reverse 'Bayley sic 1830' and 'By Thomas Haynes Bayly Poet Author of "I'd be a butterfly etc etc'. The poem is sixteen lines long and begins: 'My own Love! my true Love! here's health & joy to you Love A happy year without a tear & sweet smiles not a few Love! Of all my anniversaries I prize your Birth day best. And well I may for 'twas the day that brighten'd all the rest: To this I owe my bliss below - of more than that the Love Whose purity my guide may be to happiness above!' The poem was published in 1829 in the keepsake 'The Casket' London: John Murray; apart from accidentals that version corresponds to this. The poem is addressed to Bayly's wife born Helena Becher Hayes. The couple were married in 1826 and she died in 1867. Without place. [1830] unknown

Light wear to wrapper with partial small lass to lower corner and minor tear to foot of spine. The publication is a report by the New Zealand Company on the conditions and the progress in the settlement of New Plymouth released only one year after the first settlers arrived from the West Country of England. The report was compiled through official dispatches and private letters many from Frederic Carrington 1807-1901 the principle surveyor for New Plymouth. Topics covered include the geography quality of the soil for agriculture profitable exports the native Maori population arrival of the settlers building of the community and the climate. The publication includes a few tables and charts a well as a small botanical illustration. The final section contains the prospectus of the New Zealand Company. There is a blank sample form for purchasing land in the New Plymouth area following the pagination. A hidden/surprise full color hand painted illustration of a town with boats at the coast line is delightfully present at the foredge. Inner boards are meticulously tooled in a gilt border. Includes "Proper Lessons to be Read at Morning and Evening Prayer on the Sundays and Other Holy Days Throughout the Year" and an accompanying calendar and tables. Main text is large print. 413 pp. 91. <br><br>CONDITION: This book is classically beautiful. The Bayntun rebinding is tight and feels solid and comfortable in hand. Ornamentation and foredge painting are exquisite. Large print and binding strength makes for easy reading. Cover shows only light wear particularly at the edges. Gilt edging is vibrant. Front inner hinge is barely starting yet has not compromised the integrity of the boards which are firmly attached. Light chipping at some page edges yet text remains unaffected. Leaves are bright and bear very little foxing. Completely free from marginalia or annotation with the exception of two owner's names and notation within the front flyleaves dated from the period 1841. A magnificent copy evoking great devotion and reflection of God's glory with it's heavy and mysterious ornamentation. Full refund if not satisfied.
