Corners and spine worn head and toe of spine chipped front pastedown loose but present; later bookplate on pastedown signature on free endsheet: "Rich. Rycroft" possibly Sir Richard Rycroft 1st Baronet 1736-1786. Contemporary inscription on first titlepage some tanning and occasional light smudging but a good copy. An uncommon printing of the revised text of the Delaune's translation of the English Liturgy first published in 1616 and John Durel's translation of the 39 Articles. Durel 1625-1683 an Anglican clergyman and apologist enjoyed a distinguished career and royal favor securing a printing monopoly on this French prayer book and eventually becoming a royal chaplain in 1662. "A revised text completed before 1665 retained much of Delaune's original but incorporated changes embodied in the Act of Uniformity and Durel's translation of the Thirty-Nine Articles; it was published eight times between 1666 and 1695" - DNB. The Psalms included here have a separate titlepage dated 1686 and register though their inclusion is noted on the initial title-page. The translation into French verse is that undertaken by Clement Marot and Theodore de Beze early in the previous century. The preface is signed "I.D." i.e. James Duport a popular professor of Greek at the University of Cambridge who had the year before printed a translation of the Psalter which appears here with the BCP as issued under a separate title-page and Ordinal along with the Greek New Testament and Apocrypha the title-page of the New Testament being an insert and the Apocrypha having separate pagination. This is only the second translation of the BCP into Greek following the first by Elias Petley in 1638. There were apparently two settings of this edition produced by printer John Field in the same year under the same title and imprint with priority not established; the present example has line six of the main title-page all in capital letters and the "Alma mater Cantabrigia" device following the last page of the Psalter but while the sun is on the left and the cup on the right of the Psalter title-page device they are reversed on the New Testament title-page apparently indicating that the New Testament is from a variant post-dating the BCP and Psalter.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Contemporary mottled calf Cambridge-style covers framed in double gilt fillets and panelled in triple gilt fillets with gilt-tooled corner fleurons; spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label and gilt-ruled compartments.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Front free endpaper with early inscription in red pencil: "Gibson's / Queens / Oxon. / 1787." Cambridge: James Field 1664. 12mo. 1 f 171 1 blank pp. lacks blank leaf k6.<br>Â Â Â Â The mid-17th century was a low point in the history of English typography but in this pair of Anglican religious texts James Field printer to the University of Cambridge produced => a very good example of the printer's art of Greek printing especially in the use of a small point size. The guiding force behind their production was James Duport 160679 dean of Peterborough and master of Magdelene College Cambridge a noted scholar of Latin and Greek and supporter of the university press. The preface to the Book of Common Prayer is signed with his initials and it is established that he was the editor of the Psalms; the texts were almost certainly issued together but are also at times found individually in contemporary binding.<br>Â Â Â Â Field's minute typography here is dense and presented chiefly in double-column format in both works; and instead of woodcut head- or tailpieces and xylographic initials he deploys printer's ornaments to enliven the text at the top of some sections and occasionally elsewhere. => The layout is overall lovely and thoughtful and the printing is extremely clear and precise.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Contemporary morocco with covers framed in a single blind fillet; spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label and gilt-stamped compartment decorations. Marbled endpapers all edges gilt. => All pages ruled in red in the best style of the era.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Isaac Watts 16741748 the godfather of English hymnody is also fondly remembered for his Psalms of David: Imitated in the Language of the New Testament a work that was reprinted over a thousand times. His ownership signature is on the blank leaf opposite the BCP title-page here. Later the volume was owned by Charles Mayo 17671858 a scholar of Old English who dated his ownership as "St. John's College Oxford 1787." Most recently in the library of American collector of Greek printing Albert A. An important document in the history of the English Reformation this was the first collection of ecclesiastical law compiled by the Church of England that was not derived from Roman Catholic sources. It was originally enacted in 1571 and amended in 1603 and 1640. This latter issue contains the notorious Article VI "Impugners of the Rites and Ceremonies Established in the Church Censured" which incensed the Puritans. The wood-engraved title page is chipped worn & ragged with loss at edges/corners & a bit grubby & many page corners are friable particularly the bottom front & rear top corners. Some pages/corners front & back have a little archive tape to 'closed' chips/tears to prevent further wear/loss. There is some old damp staining to the mainly blank edges/outer margins of the pages mainly light 'shading' but a little stronger at the the end where it is bleeding into the text. However the text overall is sl. 'wavy' but a good strong printing in single column black letter with Attractive Engraved Title Letters & many decorated page headers. Rubbed Red as printed page fore-edges. Last few leaves with marginal edge/corner losses not affecting text. An old ownership inscription Francis Ford. in faint ink at the top of the title page o/w NO other inscriptions or major marks not noted. Vol. 1 = Title as above 8 98 75-76 mispaginated but correct 2 Blanks. Vol. 2 = Title reads " The Second Tome of Homilies of Svch Matters as were Promised and Entituled in the former part of HOMILIES. Set out by the authority of the Late Queenes Majesty: & to be read in every Parish Church agreeably". 4 320 4 pages. Another mispagination in the 'Homily Against Disobedience and Wilfull Rebellion' which is divided into 6 parts - where page 307 is misprinted as 313 but the correct page 313 is in place. After this 6-part Sermon the book ends with a final "Thankes-giving for the Suppression of the LAST REBELLION" & Printers Details decoratively bordered top and bottom. The first volume is attributed to Thomas Cranmer & others. The second was likely compiled by John Jewel. Gilt decor to board edges rubbed and turn-ins. Rebacked in near-matching black morocco raised bands gilt lettering and gilt decor to spine. Worm damage to base and top of spine and to adjacent boards: a sprinkling of holes and small areas of loss at bottom front board over and near hinge c. 2 x 0.5cm. 8vo 11.8 x 17.5cm. All edges gilt. Original endpapers marbled in Wide Comb pattern. Endpapers cracked at gutters. Armorial bookplate to inside front board. Bibliographic and ownership inscriptions in pencil and pen to blank verso of front free endpaper: signature dated 1983 note 'Presented to the Parish Church of Cirencester by E. F. Salmon of the Diocese of Chichester' and calligraphic signature of 'William Armistead' dated 1756; Armistead also signed the recto of the rear free endpaper with date 1760. Text printed in double columns. Ruled in red throughout. Occasional mild foxing. The second edition of the first Latin translation of the 1662 BCP the first edition was published by Norton in 1669; this is a reissue. The 1662 BCP 'was to have been translated by John Earle John Pearson & John Dolben all of whom withdrew before the work was complete; edited by Jean Durel later Dean of Windsor & editor of French revision' Griffiths. The dedication to Charles II is signed 'J. D.' for Jean Durel. There were two variants of the 1670 printing; this has the imprint in 4 lines. Scarce. Griffiths 87.10. ~Robust packaging. 164024189<p><strong>1640 Thomas Cranmer 1ed 39 Articles Henry VIII English Reformation Legum RARE</strong></p><p>An extremely important first edition of '<em>Reformatio Legum Ecclesiasticarum'</em> a work on ecclesiastical law when Henry VIII initiated the English Reformation and separation of the Church of England from the Catholic Church and papal rule. Thomas Cranmer was closely tied to the king both politically and as a friend and was an important figure in the development of this work. This work established laws and regulations for the church including prayer music testimony excommunication judicial cases and political ties to the church. Other topics covered in this work involved domestic disputes such as divorce as well as more controversial topics including calling nonconformity to the church 'superstitions and idolatrous'. Hawkins II 537.</p><p>This 1640 reworking of the '<em>Thirty Nine Articles'</em> was translated out of the original English and into Latin by John Cheke and in 1553 was reportedly published in the name of King Henry VIII. This translation was the beginning of what would lead to Thomas Cranmer's being burned alive. Much of the contents of this compilation was used by John Foxe in his portrayal of Cranmer in his '<em>Book of Martyrs'</em>.</p><p>According to the British Museum Catalogue this work is</p><p>"A code of ecclesiastical law intended for use in the Church of England but never ratified by Parliament.
