Gilt decor to board edges and turn-ins worn. Rubbing to boards. Corners bumped. Raised bands and ornate gilt decor compartments to spine rubbed and worn. Chipping and wear to top and base of spine. Outer front hinge almost fully cracked but hinge holding due to fairly recent sturdy cloth tape reinforcement on inside. Tape repair to inner rear hinge now perishing. Cracking to rear inner hinge and endpapers but hinge still firm. All edges gilt darkened. Marbled endpapers sometime added now worn with creasing to rear endpaper. Front marbled endpaper is missing the half not pasted to the boards. Large quarto 18 x 24cm. Three volumes with individual title pages all printed by John Hayes in 1683 bound together with 59 plates bound in. The plates are taken from 'The Life of our Blessed Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ. An Heroic Poem' by Samuel Wesley first published 1693 and illustrated with 60 copper plates of which all but one possibly the title or half-title were used for this volume. Only one plate is signed: St Matthew by Nicholas Yeates some small scenes of martyrdoms inserted in portraits of saints are initialled J. C. It is likely that Yeates and the more famous William Fairthorne 'recognised as the best native-born portrait engraver of the century' were part of a team which oversaw the 'extraordinary effort' of creating these dramatic and technically skilled 'complex traditional Catholic illustrations' see Hodnett 1978 'Francis Barlow: First Master of English Book Illustration'. First two volumes unpaginated. Small Nashdom Abbey inscription on inside front board. The Book of Common Prayer contains prefatory material including 'An Act for the Uniformity of Common Prayer' described in volume index but missing from copy described in ESTC. Small tear to the top of sig.B4 in Book of Common Prayer with small loss to text. Plate of 'St. Iacobvs Minor' was once partially stuck to preceding page with small loss to text and minor damage to image. Decorative initials. ~Additional notes: the marbled paper is plausibly late 17th-century but of an unusual straight herringbone design. John Hayes was apt to sell his publications gathered into bespoke volumes; we have been unable to locate another Common Prayer / New Testament / Psalter combination from his press. Darlow & Moule list two small 4to Bibles published by Hayes in 1683. They note that the first has a NT title page date of 1680 but don't mention the date of the second. Rubbing to spine and board edges and minor splash marking to spine. 4to 21.5 x 32.5cm. All edges marbled in Turkish pattern predating current rebind. Hinges sound. Replacement grey and white marbled endpapers likely contemporary with binding. Endpapers reinforced with black cloth at gutters. Owner's bookplate printed in red & black to inside front board. Early or original blank front and rear endpapers front blank endpaper with owner's signature dated 1817. With additional engraved title page signed 'P. Williamson Scu.' dated MDCLXXXI. 'The Psalter or Psalms of David after the translation of the Great Bible .' has separate dated title page; register is continuous. Divisional title page on sig. 2O4r: 'The form and manner of making ordaining and consecrating of bishops priests and deacons according to the order of the Church of England' and on sig. 2S1r: 'A form of prayer with thanksgiving to be used yearly upon the fifth day of November'. Decorative initials head- and tail-pieces throughout. Text largely printed in black letter. Very minor dampstaining to top of pages at gutter from c. sig. 2D1 onwards and at base near gutter in metrical psalms from sig. L1r. Repaired tear to leaf C4 and small 3cm closed tear to leaf T5 both slightly affecting text. Leaves F2 & F3 repaired at edges with laid paper slightly affecting text on F3v. Kalendar printed in red & black. This was one of the last BCPs to be printed in the reign of Charles II and many references to the royal family throughout have been altered and annotated in an old hand on multiple occasions to reflect the accessions of William and Mary Anne and George I. Bound with 1680 edition of the metrical psalms: 'The Whole Book of Psalms. Collected into English Meeter by Thomas Sternhold John Hopkins and others' with imprint 'Printed by J. M. for the Company of Stationers MDCLXXX'. As per ESTC this 'J. M.' was J. Macock. Repaired tear to metrical psalms leaf M1. minor impact on text. Metrical psalms printed largely in black letter double columns. BCP is ESTC R27758 Griffiths 1683 1. Collated A-C4 D6 E2 F-G4 H-2N6 2O4 2P-2Q6 2R4 2S6. Metrical psalms are ESTC R175365 collated A-M6 N4. Some slightly erratic pagination to metrical psalms starting at p. 59. A late Carolean edition of the BCP in solid 20th-century binding annotations reflecting its use through the reigns of the two final Stuart queens Mary and Anne and into the reign of George I. ~Robust packaging. Armorial bookplate of Franciscus Antonius Comes de Stürgkh 18th-century Austrian Graf to front pastedown period inscription on front flyleaf. <br/><br/>Defensio Regia pro Carolo I Defense of the Reign of Charles I which was published anonymously in November 1649 was probably sponsored by Charles II who is thought to have paid a hundred pounds for its printing. The work called for European rulers to unite against the new English republic and place Prince Charles on the throne. This work represents a reversal of Salmasius earlier views since it supported the divine origin of kingship defended the powers of a king and blamed the attacks of the Revolution on the English people. Salmasius studied at Paris 1604-06 and at Heidelberg 1606-09. During his years at Heidelberg he discovered the Palatine manuscript of the Greek Anthology. In 1610 his commentary on Solinus Polyhistor was published. His enormous learning especially in ancient languages- he was fluent in Hebrew Arabic Syriac Persian and Coptic as well as Greek and Latin- led to offers from several universities. In 1631 he became professor at Leiden and stayed there for the remainder of his life except for one year 1650-51 at the Swedish court where he was a guest due to the fame his Defensio Regia pro Carolo I had brought him. He returned to Leiden soon after the publication of Miltons reply Pro Populo Anglicano Defensio in 1651. [B. & A. Elzevir] hardcover

Originally attributed to Charles I but according to Madan composed by John Gauden Bishop of Worcester who probably included some authentic writings of the King and may even have collaborated with him. The first edition was in print on the day of Charles I's execution on 30 January 1649 followed by many editions with various erroneous dates and publishing details. The Eikon reviews the course of the civil wars from the calling of the Long Parliament in 1640 to Charles's imprisonment at Carisbrooke Castle in 1647 and defends the King's policies. It is part political memoir and part spiritual autobiography presenting Charles as the defender of both Church and State. Written in a moving straightforward style in diary form the Eikon combines irenic prayers urging forgiveness of Charles's executioners with a justification of royalism. The poem "Majesty in Misery" said to have been written by the King at Carisbrooke first appeared in the 1676 edition of Perinchief's Life of King Charles but this is the first edition of the Eikon in which it was printed. Front free endpaper removed. Early signature of Edw. Roberts on the top margin of the frontispiece. Book stamp of J.H. Rudemare at the foot of the titlepage possibly the Abbé Rudemare. Large Thick Folio 14" x 9.25" handsomely bound in the original contempoaray polished speckled calf the spine with raised bands over cords double ruled in gilt red morocco lettering label bgilt central gilt ornamental devices in the compartments. 2 frontispiece and engraved title xii 120 2 458 2; viii 733 4 Table plates pp. An unusually fine survival still retaining its original binding. The text-block and illustrations all crisp and clean and unpressed the binding still strong and in a a very pleasing state of preservation. An especially pleasing copy. FIRST EDITION OF THE MOST COMPLETE OF ALL WORKS ON KING CHARLES I OF ENGLAND AND THE KINGDOM. Charles I 1600 – 1649 was King of England Scotland and Ireland from 27 March 1625 until his execution in 1649.<br />Charles was born into the House of Stuart as the second son of King James VI of Scotland. After his father inherited the English throne in 1603 he moved to England where he spent much of the rest of his life. He became heir apparent to the kingdoms of England Scotland and Ireland in 1612 upon the death of his elder brother Henry Frederick Prince of Wales.<br />After his accession in 1625 Charles quarreled with the English Parliament which sought to curb his royal prerogative. He believed in the divine right of kings and was determined to govern according to his own conscience. Many of his subjects opposed his policies in particular the levying of taxes without Parliamentary consent and perceived his actions as those of a tyrannical absolute monarch. His religious policies coupled with his marriage to a Catholic generated antipathy and mistrust from Reformed religious groups such as the English Puritans and Scottish Covenanters who thought his views too Catholic. He supported high church Anglican ecclesiastics and failed to aid continental Protestant forces successfully during the Thirty Years' War. His attempts to force the Church of Scotland to adopt high Anglican practices led to the Bishops' Wars strengthened the position of the English and Scottish parliaments and helped precipitate his own downfall.<br />From 1642 Charles fought the armies of the English and Scottish parliaments in the English Civil War. After his defeat in 1645 at the hands of the Parliamentarian New Model Army he fled north from his base at Oxford. Charles surrendered to a Scottish force and after lengthy negotiations between the English and Scottish parliaments was handed over to the Long Parliament in London. Charles refused to accept his captors' demands for a constitutional monarchy and temporarily escaped captivity in November 1647. Re-imprisoned on the Isle of Wight he forged an alliance with Scotland but by the end of 1648 the New Model Army had consolidated its control over England. Charles was tried convicted and executed for high treason in January 1649. The monarchy was abolished and the Commonwealth of England was established as a republic. The monarchy was restored in 1660 with Charles's son Charles II as king.<br />Archbishop William Laud whom Parliament beheaded during the war called Charles a "mild and gracious prince who knew not how to be or how to be made great." Charles was more sober and refined than his father but he was intransigent. He deliberately pursued unpopular policies that brought ruin on himself. Both Charles and James were advocates of the divine right of kings but while James's ambitions concerning absolute prerogative were tempered by compromise and consensus with his subjects Charles believed he had no need to compromise or even to explain his actions.
