A very scarce mid eighteenth century printing of the thirty-nine articles of the Church of England - the historically defining statements of doctrines and practices of the church with respect to the English Reformation - and further matters concerning the Anglican church.The articles are printed alongside several parliamentary acts concerning ecclesiastical matters 'His Majesty"s directions for the preserving of unity in the church and the purity of the Christian faith' and the Archbishop of Canterbury"s 'letter to the bishops of his province concerning persons to be ordained or licensed for Curates'.ESTC reference no. Its English text reflected the religious changes of the Reformation and anticipated the Book of Common Prayer. Collation: 118 unnumbered leaves. Size: 7 x 4.5 inches 17.8 x 11.4 cm. The statement is then signed by William Bent the proprietor and publisher of this work. In two parts this work is a guide to the week for Christians and includes prayers hymns as well an altar companion. In a full calf binding. Externally heavily rubbed to the boards and spine. Loss to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Loss to the tail of the rear joint. Crack to the tail of spine. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front free endpaper dated 1802. Internally firmly bound. Pages are age toned mostly to edges/ Pages 135-142 of part I are severely age toned with marks to pages. The occasional handling mark to pages and light spotting throughout. A very good copy complete with all 36 plates called for in the instructions and 2 additional. 11 of the plates are bound consecutively in the preliminaries rather than placed in the text; these 11 plates all have relatively simple borders in contrast with the ones properly placed.<br /> <br /> Sumptuously illustrated Church of England prayer book with a substantial apparatus of theological historical and critical commentary. Issued in 36 numbered parts the text is complete despite the gap in pagination between pages 46 and 57. The anomalous pagination of the preliminaries is explained in the binder's directions: "N.B. Place the Act for the Uniformity of Common-Prayer &c. and the Tables of Proper Lessons Feasts Fasts Kindred and to find Easter-Day viz. 5O and 5P i.e. 4 leaves of part 36 immediately after the Preface before the Calendar."
