With an attractive contemporary dark red morocco bookplate: "Charlotte Godwin 1798" in gilt with double fillet gilt borders and decorative motif on the front pastedown. Corners bumped with moderate scattered foxing to the text pages else a beautiful fine copy with an interesting early American bookplate. The border resembles Didot. The use of the singular for the sacraments is an error see Griffiths. Both the British Library and the Huntington have copies with this variation. Special full black straight grained morocco both boards centrally inlaid red green and gilt insignia with the name Thos. Harrison above insignia and dated 1823 below boards trimmed in a decorative gilt roll binding by Thomas Harrison with 1825 on front cover with red insignia. Someone has taken the trouble to paste a large slip of paper onto the recto of the front free endpaper over a large ownership note that may read "Thomas Tilison His Bible Septr 4th 1784. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Prayer Book: Griffiths Bibliography of the Book of Common Prayer 1786/2; ESTC N66721. Loss to head of spine corners bumped small areas of rubbing to boards. Contents clean a bright. A very good copy. An almost miniature authorised Book of Common Prayer which records a remarkable encounter between two women. Pasted to one of the final end-papers is a short extract from a newspaper on mortality taken from a sermon recorded in the Boston Gazette. On the next leaf is a short manuscript account from the nineteenth-century recalling a Mrs Banks likely the Mrs Banks n�e Truman whose initials are tooled to the binding on her deathbed reading the passage aloud to a Miss Sophie Banks before declaring that she would paste it in her prayer book. The manuscript authors supposes that Mrs Banks must have 'lost no time' in doing so as she died the morning after on 11 February 1834. The last record of what may have been its owners dying act which intimately shows a passage of sermonising being taken from print to an oral discussion between two women to its final resting place pasted to the end of this volume. The book's former owner Prince Gregory was gentleman of the Chapel Royal from 1740 to 1755 DNB William Gregory. The Gregorys had a storied family history as musicians to the crown Prince's ancestors included the composer William Gregory d. 1663 violinist to Charles I; Henry Gregory member of the King's band to Charles II; and the 'singing man' John Gregory.
