Henry John Temple (1784-1865) was the elder son of Henry Temple, second Viscount Palmerston. He succeeded to the peerage in 1802 and became a Tory MP in 1807, eventually becoming Foreign Secretary in 1830,a post which he held for many years, being active in all the great international of the early Victorian era. events and upheavals. He became prime minister in 1855. During his political career, he was elected to sit in 17 parliaments and served four monarchs: George III, George IV, William IV and Queen Victoria. Sm. 8vo., First and Sole Edition thus, some very light and occasional marginal age-stains; contemporary marbled boards, neatly rebacked in calf to style, leather label ruled and lettered in gilt, a very good, clean copy of a very scarce work. This copy was formerly in the possession of Charles Arrowsmith and bears his signed holograph inscription on front paste-down 'qualified as a Governor & Director of the Poor of the Parish of Saint Pancras. Dec. 4 1832.'The statute referred to is 59 Geo. III. Cap. xxxix. It is of unusual length (176pp inc. index) and complexity for an Act of this nature and includes a detailed and comprehensive index. Extremely scarce, especially in this condition.

Presentation copy from John Burns to Marjorie Lockton, signed and dated 1933 with a note about having a sore arm from billiards. John burns was a labor agitator at the turn of the century London, arrested and prosecuted for sedition and aquitted in 1886, sentenced for participating in a riot in Trafalgar square then later elected member of Parliament in 1892, 1895, 1900 & 1906.

Hardbound. Charles Pigott (died 1794) was an ardent champion of the French Revolution. This was the first of his "two scurrilous pamphlets on London society, with which he seems to have been well acquainted. The other was 'The Female Jockey Club (1794). "To hold the mirror up to Nature, to shew Vice its own image, is the design of this publication; it will be styled severe, but there are cases, where severity is justice, and it is much to be feared that the persons in question are too incorrigible to be chastened by any lecture either of gentle or harsh reproof - Preface.
