15229Albion Iron Works Westbromwich West Bromwich. 21 June 1844. With 'WEST BROMWICH' postmark. 1p. 4to. Bifolium addressed on the reverse of the second leaf to 'Messrs. Thomson Hankey <& Co> Merchants 7 Mincing Lane London'. The second leaf is also docketed and carries two circular postmarks one from 'WEST BROMWICH'. Williams writes that he has returned to find 'an enquiry about the nails & chains'. He gives a price below which he cannot go adding: 'I must be paid for the Casks: but if a quantity of nails had been wanted I would have given my trouble on the other things as I should have made a profit on the nails'. The 'last Casks were indifferent as the P<> had a bad bargain. I would not send new ones. If I send more I must buy them.' The final paragraph reads: 'I confess the price for Chains seems high but they are very light & would be useless if made with bad iron such as Scotch hot blast but if you will venture that I am of opinion you may get them in London at a lower rate. The ‘Ajax business’ referred to in the letter is the performance of the first of the Cambridge Greek plays organised by the archaeologist Sir Charles Walston formerly Waldstein 1856-1927. Begins: ‘My dear Thomas / My friend Dr Waldstein who has got up the whole Ajax business asks me to send you the enclosed admission and programme.’ He ends by offering to get him ‘any details as to the archaeological part of the business’. 18 November 1882. 5589Stamped 11 Nov. 1929. Printed postcard with manuscript additions minor defects. The printed heading describes him as ""The Autograph King. Unchallenged. Owner of the largest collection of Modern Autographs in the World" lists the Exhibitions at which he has displayed his stock and adds his address and a request to the recipient to write their autograph "Request Register No. 17861". The recipient of this was Philip Yale Drew who added "Young Buffalo" to his full clear signature on the reverse. In this same year 1929 Drew had been arrested as a suspect in the the murder of tobacconist Alfred Oliver. With the original envelope in which the card was returned addressed to Bray in Drew's hand. Begins: 'Prof. Corfield presents his compliments to Miss Armstrong and begs to inform her that his Course of Lectures on Hygiene to Ladies will commence on Thursday Octr. 2nd at University College London and will be illustrated by specimens &c from the Parkes Museum.' He would forward a syllabus if he had one and suggests that she apply to the college secretary 'for a copy of the Prospectus of the Faculties of Science'. In 1891 From the family papers of George Frederick Armstrong Regius Professor of Egineering University of Edinburgh who himself published several works on sanitation. Florence Nightingale wrote to Douglas Galton that 'Professor Corfield is the man whose ''simple practical teaching'' in his ''Hygiene Lectures'' is recommended by good women.'
