Henry John Temple (1784-1865) was the elder son of Henry Temple, second Viscount Palmerston. He succeeded to the peerage in 1802 and became a Tory MP in 1807, eventually becoming Foreign Secretary in 1830,a post which he held for many years, being active in all the great international of the early Victorian era. events and upheavals. He became prime minister in 1855. During his political career, he was elected to sit in 17 parliaments and served four monarchs: George III, George IV, William IV and Queen Victoria.
