First edition of the first of Joseph Cundall's illuminated gift books with decoration by John Brandard printed in chromolithography by Hanhart. Purportedly the first Christmas book printed in chromolithography. The borders in the book were copied from Harleian MS 2936 and MS 3469 Royal MS.19.C.3 and 19.C.8 the DeCroy MS and Henry VIII's Missal all in the British Library; also used was a Book of Hours in the possession of the publisher. Cundall was also the first commercially printed Christmas card in December 1843. MACLEAN VICTORIAN BOOK DESIGN and Colour Printing. p.109. "It appeared in an elaborate embossed and colour-printed paper binding in the French style." Maclean also notes his career was hard to follow as he worked a great deal on his own. Light vertical and horizontal center folds three short tears at the horizontal fold near fine with a contemporary drawing of a few survey lines and diagrams very lightly sketched in ink and pencil on the final blank page. The Society states its case against slavery in the Colonies of Great Britain where "there are at this moment upwards of 800000 human beings in a state of degrading personal slavery." It provides a brief but detailed description of "the immoral inhuman and unjust" nature of the slave trade and of the absolute power of slave owners. The catalogue of printed books was prepared by Nicholas Carlisle and that of Manuscripts by Henry Ellis. According to the Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science the Catalogue of the Printed Books "was reputed to be the first true dictionary catalog; it used the duplicate entry approach within a single alphabet including catchword or subject word for anonymous works as well as for those the authors of which were known. This practice however was followed to a limited extent in the Philadelphia Association Library Company Catalogue of 1765.
