194579279New York N.Y.: American Association for a Democratic Germany 1945. Presumed First Edition First printing. Pamphlet. Fair. 15 1 pages. Some discoloration and wear. RARE. Foreword by William Ernest Hocking Alford Professor Emeritus Harvard University. This pamphlet includes a brief chronological account of concentration camps in Germany from their inauguration in 1933 until the beginning of the war in 1939 based on contemporary records published in the democratic countries and available to the general public. William Ernest Hocking August 10 1873 - June 12 1966 was an American idealist philosopher at Harvard University. He continued the work of his philosophical teacher Josiah Royce the founder of American idealism in revising idealism to integrate and fit into empiricism naturalism and pragmatism. He said that metaphysics has to make inductions from experience: "That which does not work is not true." His 22 books included works on philosophy and human rights freedom of the press and human nature. William Hocking argues that we owe something to that Germany which struggled against the inevitable until a million and a quarter had been in the Nazi concentration camps 15 per cent of whom were Jews and 85 per cent non-Jews while we of the Western powers smiled on and appeased their prosecutors. The American Association for a Democratic Germany had among its officers: Reinhoild Nieburh and Dorothy Thompson as Vice-Chairmen and William Ernest Hocking Charles LaFollette Kenesaw Mountain Landis III and Victor Reuther were among the members of the National Committee. From its Statement of Purpose its aim was "To Foster the development of genuine democracy in Germany. Only if the common people of Germany get help in establishing democratic ways and educating their children to democratic living can Germany be a healthy peaceful state and can Europe and the world be safe. Democracy is possible in Germany. Seek out the proven democrats. They will come from the concentration camps and prisons where Hitler had to chain them. 151715131Augsburg: Johann Schoensperger 1517. First Edition. 9 x 13 inches. Some paper toning and light foxing. Some leaves have an anchor-in-circle watermark and some others a crowned double-eagle.As described in Fairfax-Muray p530. The folios are unnumbered minor wear at edges see pic overall excellent. Suitable for framing. This famously beautiful font was designed by the court calligrapher and personal secretary to Maximillian -- Vinzenz Rockner and cut by Jost Dienecker of Antwerp. The Theuerdank fraktur is almost "modern" and was the model for many subsequent designs. It is embellished with ornamental flourishes . Theuerdank literally meaning "The Knight of Adventurous Thoughts" is an allegory in the form of epic verse that retells the adventures of Maximilian as he traveled to woo his future wife Mary of Burgundy. Although she died after only five years of marriage Maximilian regarded the years of his courtship as the ideal romantic interlude and the epitome of a knightly adventure. Mary was indeed the daughter of his own knightly hero Charles the Bold of Burgundy. The book is largely fictitious characterizing Maximilian as a chivalric knight in the Arthurian sense. The text is supposedly written by Melchior Pfintzing a friend of Maximilian but Maximilian himself probably composed the majority of the work. VD 16 B1649-51. Fairfax/Murray 330.
