Laid-in is a page from a 1950 Boston Symphony program inscribed by Leonard Bernstein a Pierre Monteux autograph and printed flyer announcing a 1956 lecture by Sir Hubert Wilkins at the Georgia Institute of Technology.<br /> <br /> An important autograph book kept by the Philadelphia architect LeRoy B. Rothschild from 1908 until his death in 1935 and later by his wife Mille up through 1952. Rothschild was a member of “The Ell Kube†– a secret society founded by American Jews at the University of Pennsylvania and designed several commercial buildings in Philadelphia.<br /> <br /> The book contains 48 autographs and inscriptions several of which date from performances given by the New York Metropolitan Opera at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia from 1908-12. Included is one autograph and two full page self-portrait sketches signed by Enrico Caruso together with autographs and inscriptions by several other world famous singers and musicians. The album also includes autographs and inscriptions by several world famous explorers such as Ernest Shackleton Robert Peary and Hubert Wilkins and the American traveler and filmmaker E. Burton Holmes.<br /> <br /> Among the later entries in the book are autographs by virtuoso violinists Naoum Blinder 1947 Isaac Stern 1947 and Yehudi Menuhin 1952 and laid-in is a program inscribed by Leonard Bernstein “For Mrs. Rothschild.†An impressive autograph book kept by two prominent figures among Philadelphia’s Jewish community. Oblong folio five pages the set includes: a blueprint of the toll plaza conduit diagram and manholes Gold Gate Bridge and Highway District of California October 1 1936 signed by Joseph Strauss and others on the plate measures 21.25 inches by 35.5 inches; two copies of the proposed location of a highway through the United States Military Reservation Fort Baker to the Golden Gate Bridge Alternate No. 2 1933 with Strauss Engineering Company stamp measures 29.25 inches by 52.75 inches; two copies of the plot plan for the Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District of San Francisco California n.d. one copy annotated with extensive manuscript notations denoting plans for electricity supply for fluorescent lighting on the bridge measures 23 inches by 39.75 inches. In good condition with numerous closed tears and some rubbing to the extremities. A attractive set of blueprints depicting structures such as a toll plaza which no longer exists in the form shown on the plans. Rare artifacts like these used in the construction of one of the longest bridges in the world are historically recognizable and desirable examples of modern engineering. Construction on the Golden Gate Bridge began on January 5 1933 and was officially completed on May 27 1937 allowing pedestrians to cross for the first time; one day later President Franklin Roosevelt gave the final okay officially allowing vehicles to cross. The chief engineer Joseph Baermann Strauss and his associates performed the bulk of the planning and execution of the bridge's construction. Strauss Engineering Company unknown

In French with translation. <br/><br/>An important letter in which Strauss discusses the forthcoming Dresden Berlin and Monte Carlo premières of his opera Elektra. <br/><br/>". Tell Raoul Gunsbourgh that I am sure to finish the score for Elektra by September that everything will be printed by the beginning of December and that the French première at Monte Carlo can take place towards the end of February or the beginning of March. I myself will be able to conduct Elektra at Monte Carlo if all circumstances permit. I want to personally assist in the première of Elektra at Dresden at the end of January. "<br/><br/>Very slightly soiled; creased at folds. As promised Strauss completed the score for Elektra on September 22 1908. The opera premièred at the Dresden Hofoper on January 25 1909 followed shortly thereafter by a performance in Berlin on February 15. Although publically announced in newspapers such as the New York Times the Monte Carlo première appears not to have eventuated. The French language première of the opera was actually given by the Manhattan Opera Company on February 1 1910; Strauss accorded the first American performance of Elektra to this fledgling company of Oscar Hammerstein's as something of an act of revenge upon the Metropolitan Opera for banning his previous opera Salome. <br/> <br/>Raoul Gunsbourgh 1860-1955 was the longest-serving director of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo his career there spanning almost six decades. unknown books

Oblong quarto. Measures 13.5" x 10.25". Contemporary half morocco and cloth boards with "Varieties-Piano" stamped in gilt on the spine. Scuffing at the joints and corners scattered foxing a few early wove-paper repairs about very good. A unique custom bound collection of popular waltzes and opera arrangements for piano most likely assembled by a Viennese-based musician in the 1850s. Only one of the manuscript arrangements is signed and dated: "Clementine Steiner … März 1853.†Most of the printed scores were published by the famous Viennese music publisher and composer Anton Diabelli in the Euterpe series from the 1840s and 1850s.<br /> <br /> The manuscript leaves consists of about 17 short pieces and 18 longer works most of which range from four to 10 pages each. Among the scores in manuscript are piano arrangements from Wagner's Der fliegende Holländer Rienzi Lohengrin and Tannhäuser. Also included are arrangements from operas by Verdi Donizetti Meyerbeer and Gounod. The music is neatly written in ink with one short section in pencil most likely in two different hands with the titles tempos and lyrics in German. Bound-in after the manuscript scores are 10 printed scores ranging from three to 13 pages each. These include waltzes by Josef Strauss H.C. Lumbye Joseph Lanner and others; and various extracts from operas by Bellini arranged for piano by Anton Diabelli. Salzburg 30th July From 1919 to 1924 he was principal conductor of the Vienna State Opera and in 1920 he co-founded the Salzburg Festival. In addition to these posts Strauss was a frequent guest conductor in opera houses and with orchestras internationally. In 1933 Strauss was appointed to two important positions in the musical life of Nazi Germany: head of the Reichsmusikkammer and principal conductor of the Bayreuth Festival.
