The first consistent systematic application of the then quasi-Hegelian notion of myth to the New Testament and early Christianity offering an epoch-making interpretation of the Christ of the Gospels as the unintentional product of a "mythos" of Messianic expectation already present in ancient Hebrew culture. The book was a scandal which adversely affected Strauss's entire career offending rationalist and orthodox biblical literalists alike. Strauss came to be known as the "alienated theologian" and he died having written a last work - The Old and the New Faith - which eschewed religion altogether in favor of scientific materialism - for which he was savagely attacked by no less than the philosopher Nietzsche. For all of that his work laid the foundation for the cultural and synoptic approaches to the New Testament which have dominated modern Biblical research. This is a critical document in the evolution of the Western religious sensibility.

PRINTING AND THE MIND OF MAN 300

CONDITION: Very good in matching contemporary 3/4 leather with marbled boards. He immigrated to New York in 1846 to join his two older brothers at their wholesale dry goods business. He moved to San Francisco in 1853 attracted by the Gold Rush. He established a wholesale business and was the west coast representative of the New York family business. He later renamed the company Levi Strauss & Co. Originally a dry goods business it became famous for its blue jeans. Levi's customer Jacob Davis a Nevada tailor invented a way to make pants with rivets at points of strain to extend their life. Levi partnered with Davis and they were granted a patent on May 20 1873 from which the now famous blue jeans were born.
In addition to his clothing company Levi was a charter member and treasurer of the San Francisco Board of Trade; director of the Nevada Bank; director of the Liverpool London and Globe Insurance Company; director of the San Francisco Gas and Electric Company; and part owner of the Mission and Pacific Woolen Mills. In addition to his many business pursuits Levi was a philanthropist who contributed to the Pacific Hebrew Orphan Asylum and Home; the Eureka Benevolent Society and the Hebrew Board of Relief. Bound into grey and black patterned boards with tan spine labels with gilt lettering. Band 1 dated 1835 band 2 dated 1836. Scuffing and some bumping to edges and joints of the boards. Bindings remains firm. Internally in nice condition. A controversial Hegelian inspired work on the historical origins of Christianity which met immediate backlash upon publication by both the orthodox as well as more rational. "Strauss maintained with unyielding vigor the theory which has no basis in fact that the Christ of the Gospels excepting the barest scraps of personal history was the unintentional creation of the early Christian Messianic expectations. The miracles to which he applied the severest and narrowest criteria were thus largely dismissed as fiction and his view of the relation of the human to the divine was jejune." PMM 300.
