1945100362
April 11 1945. 1945. Very good. - Over 250 words typed on his personal 10-1/2 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide embossed watermarked linen stationery. Irving Berlin writes to Bob Sidney the choreographer of his important World War II musical "This Is the Army" concerning new music he created for the show's tour of the Philippines. He writes that "I hope all went well in Mendora Mindora and that the new number is working out.As I wrote you from Leyte unless this number is a riot I wouldn't keep it in. Another spot may help but I still feel the number is too slow." Berlin had introduced his new song "Heaven Watch the Philippines" during a ceremony in Leyte in March of 1945 singing the song with a chorus of Filipino girls and the cast of the play "This Is the Army". He wrote the song as a tribute to the Filipino people and their resilience during World War II. In his letter to Bob Sidney he expresses his concern that the song will be misunderstood. "I am really concerned about the Philippine song especially when you play Manila and the rest of the tour through the Philippines. I hope Shanley Pvt. Robert Shanley got away with the announcement. If not someone else should explain the song. It makes much more sense with an announcement. I would also try to get some children for every performance as we did in Leyte. In any event the shows you play in Manila should have the children for every performance." Signed in full "Irving Berlin". Folded for mailing with some light creases. Near fine.

Originally composed as a Broadway Musical Irving Berlin's "This is the Army" was staged as a morale-boosting revue to raise money for the troops. The musical opened on Broadway on July 4 1942 during the Second World War with a cast consisting of 300 uniformed soldiers. The show was so successful that it was followed by a national and international tour playing in the European Far East and Pacific Theaters of War. Irving Berlin designed the show so that he could insert new songs depending on the location of the performances. "My British Buddy" was composed for the English performances and "Heaven Watch the Philippines" for Pacific Island shows. The song "Heaven Watch the Philippines" was written as a tribute to the Filipino people's resilience during the war and as a benefit to aid in the recovery following the war. Dedicated to General Douglas MacArthur Berlin sang the song with a chorus of Filipino girls and the cast of the musical in a presentation ceremony in Philippine city of Leyte in March 1945. He subsequently donated the song to the country with proceeds to go to the Boy & Girl Scouts of the Philippines.

The Russian-born American composer and songwriter Irving Berlin 1888-1989 wrote an estimated 1500 songs including scores for 20 Broadway musicals and 15 Hollywood movies. His music forms a large part of the Great American Songbook.

The American choreographer Robert Sidney 1909-2008 was self-taught as a dancer. He made his Broadway debut in "On Your Toes" in 1936 and appeared in George Balanchine's "Keep Off the Grass". Assigned to the Special Services Division during the Second World War he was the principal choreographer for Irving Berlin's musical "This Is The Army" and was later involved in the movie version starring Ronald Reagan. He choreographed many Broadway shows and worked with Bing Crosby Rita Hayworth Nancy Walker Jackie Gleason Cyd Charisse Debbie Reynolds and Mitzi Gaynor. He also went on to work in television choreographing for "The Dean Martin Show" television versions of musicals and 4 Academy Awards shows.
April 11, 1945.

1934152189New York 1934. Rare dinner invitation signed and inscribed by both Irving Berlin and Moss Hart from a dinner party held aboard the MV Saturnia on August 5 1934. Printed on Arches paper with an illustration after Charles Martin on the cover. Inscribed by Berlin on the cover “To Mrs. Annie Wales all good wishes from Irving Berlin†and by Hart on the reverse “To Annie Wales Moss Hart ‘Saturnia.’†At the date of the invitation Berlin and Hart were Broadway’s reigning collaborators having written the revues Face the Music 1932 and As Thousands Cheer 1933 together. The Saturnia a premier Italian ocean liner of the 1930s and among the first ships to offer private balconies to passengers sailed the Trieste–New York route until her requisition for service in the Second World War. From the collection of Tony Grammy and Emmy Award–winning composer Charles Strouse and his wife choreographer Barbara Siman. Over his 50-year career Charles Strouse wrote the music for such iconic musical theater hits as Bye Bye Birdie Applause and Annie as well as the theme song for the classic sitcom All in the Family “Those Were the Daysâ€. His partnership with Martin Charnin on Annie produced one of Broadway’s most successful scores ever with “Tomorrow†and other songs from the production becoming enduring American musical standards admired by generations. His reach knew no genre or generation from a number-one Billboard hit in 1958 to Jay-Z’s Grammy-winning sampling of “It’s the Hard-Knock Life†four decades later and his honors include three Tony Awards and induction into both the Songwriters and Theater Halls of Fame. In good condition with small pen marks at the head of the cover faint browning to the margins and water-staining to the recipient’s name on both sides not affecting the Berlin inscription. A document of Broadway’s golden generation from the collection of one of its heirs. Irving Berlin whom Jerome Kern declared “has no place in American music — he is American music” wrote an unequaled songbook across six decades from “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” through “God Bless America” “White Christmas” and the score of Annie Get Your Gun. Moss Hart his collaborator on the revues Face the Music and As Thousands Cheer became one of the defining men of the American theater: with George S. Kaufman he wrote You Can’t Take It With You awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and The Man Who Came to Dinner and as a director he staged the original productions of My Fair Lady and Camelot. His memoir Act One remains among the most celebrated accounts of a life in the theater. unknown

On a sheet of his personal stationery 7" x 10" addressed to Michael de Lisio of MGM Pictures Berlin answers an inquiry about a rumor prevalent since the 1920s that his songs had been written for him by an anonymous black boy. In full: "The little colored boy story that MacLane talks about is probably the Harry Ruby one. Some years ago I walked into the Friar's Club with a three months Palm Beach tan and Harry Ruby who was in the club pointed to me and said 'there's the little colored fellow who writes all of Berlin's stuff.' Another Ruby crack about the colored fellow was -- Sometime ago a songwriter asked Ruby how old the little colored boy was and Harry replied 'oh about Irving's age.'" Original publisher's orange cloth. Original edition. B.H. Breslauer copy of the justly famous catalogue of the vast collection of ornamental books and prints of the Kunstbibliothek Berlin at one time the most comprehensive in existence in the field of decorative art and architecture. It comprised printed material from the late 15th to the early 19th century. The collection was based upon that of Hippolyte Destailleur the great connoisseur which was acquired in 1879 to which was added the extraordinary holdings of the Kunstgewerbemuseum and Kupferstichkabinett. The catalogue is a model of its kind with complete descriptions and plate counts often missing in reference works that claimed to "succeed" it of no less than 5435 items. The collections suffered greivous losses during WWII but the present catalogue remains of permanent value to bibliographers and art historians alike as is attested by the facsimile reprints of it all greatly inferior to ours on account of the shoddy reproductions of the illustrations. Our copy is attractively bound with all the original wrappers of the first 12 fascicles bound in. This original edition is scarce having been published in Berlin at the worst possible time in publishing history namely from 1936-1939.

Ad 2: Printed in 1977 the books described in this "English Architectural Art" volume were completely lost during WWII and thus the rebuiding of this collection became a priority for the Kunstbibliothek Berlin aided with a generous grant from the Volkswagon Foundation. The results are herein and present 119 titles of rare English architectural and topographical books ranging in date from Dugale's "Monasticon Anglicum" 1661 to Robinson's "Designs for Gate Cottages" 1837 all very capably described. 1949177431New York: no publisher 1949. I lift my lamp beside the golden door Rehearsal script for the musical concerning the model for the Statue of Liberty including the song "Give Me Your Tired Your Poor". which the composer hoped would become another "God Bless America". This appears to be an early version of the script as it includes three numbers that were not recorded on the original Broadway cast recording. Three years after Annie Get Your Gun had proved a triumph Berlin returned to Broadway "with a show that had all the earmarks of a hit" Deutsch p. 14. In competition with South Pacific Kiss Me Kate and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes the show achieved a respectable run of 308 performances but has never been revived on Broadway. The script comprises the title page a listing of characters a listing of scenes the script of Act 1 57 pages Act 2 52 pages and a concluding blank. This copy has the ownership signature of Ted Adolphus on the title page. Theodore Adolphus 1894-1969 was a German-born dancer and choreographer who worked on All the King's Horses 1934 and Sweethearts 1947. Dances and musical numbers for Miss Liberty however were staged by Jerome Robbins. Nevertheless there are pencil annotations throughout "all applaud and exit" "Countess comes back for bow and into scene" "singers and dancers do a 32 bar parade before fig proper starts" "boys loud shirts rowdy atmospheres" etc. two loosely inserted notes and one diagram of staging positions on the verso of leaf 2-7-41. The three musical numbers present in the script but excluded from the "complete" Broadway cast recording comprise the opening chorus "Extra -- Extra / Morning noon and night we yell" "Miss Liberty" and "Me an' my bundle". Folio. Carbon typescript 113 leaves 278 x 215 mm printed one side only with one sheet blank page number "1-2-23" repeated. Original red wrappers front wrapper lettered in black comprising title and "Hart Stenographic Bureau" name and address two split pins. Housed in custom red cloth folding box.
