Vienna April 19 1907. 1 page written on what appears to be a leaf from Wagner-Jauregg's prescription pad. 101 x 165 mm. Fine.</p> <p>From Viennese psychiatrist Julius Wagner-Jauregg who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology / Medicine in 1927 "for his discovery of the therapeutic value of malaria inoculation in the treatment of dementia paralytica" Nobel e-Museum. For Wagner-Jauregg's work on curing mental illnesses by inducing fevers see Garrison-Morton 4806 and 4946.</p> Wagner-Jauregg's letter can be translated as follows:</p> <p>Dear Colleague I would like to recommend Mr. Brunn a merchant who last year was erroneously diagnosed as a paralytic by a physician in Joachimstal for a slight cure to be taken at the waters at Karlsbad which were beneficial to him two years ago. In German with translation.<br/><br/>A long densely-written letter regarding Wagner's proposed biography of Beethoven and mentioning his opera Rienzi.<br/><br/>Wagner who was trying to eke out a living in Paris at the time attempts to interest Winkler in his two-volume monograph on Beethoven based on the research of Wagner's friend Gottfried Engelbert Anders 1795-1866 a German-born librarian in Paris. Wagner declares his intention to supersede Anton Schindler's biography of Beethoven published in the previous year which he considers inadequate. He asks Winkler to recommend him to the publisher Christoph Arnold 1763-1847 and names his and Anders's requested fees to be paid in part as advances: <br/><br/>"Herr Anders found Schindler's book to be very poor compared to his own collection of communications on Beethoven . also every thoughtful and sensitive reader has expressed his opinion on Schindler's book that it falls short of meeting the demands of a true biography as it had been expected. Herr Anders was prompted to realize his long-cherished dream. As his position. leaves him hardly any time and he also confesses that an easy fluent realization will not come to him he has offered to leave me all his rich material and to discuss everything with me but to have the book itself written by me. Avoiding any fussy pedantic scholarly philistinism of citation our book shall be more like a great novel on an artist than like a dry enumeration of chronologically ordered dates and anecdotes."<br/><br/>In the final paragraph Wagner expresses his frustration about the long silence of the Dresden court opera regarding a possible production of his opera Rienzi:<br/><br/>"I have to confess to you that my opera Rienzi still means more to me than anything else. I am almost dying of my unruly lack of patience concerning the decision of the general direction. Enclosed with the present letter was Wagner's third "Pariser Bericht" dated May 5 1841. Winkler was active in many fields; trained as a lawyer he achieved fame as a poet editor arts administrator and stage director.<br/><br/>Wagner's biography of Beethoven did not in fact materialize. After Arnold declined the publishers Brockhaus and Cotta did the same. <br/><br/>Rienzi was first performed at the Dresden court opera on October 20 1842. unknown books

Autograph musical quotation from the legendary Austrian-Hungarian conductor who conducted the very first Bayreuth Festival and in 1877 shared the conductorship of the Wagner festival in London with the composer. Richter has penned two short Wagnerian themes: at the left the march theme from Die Meistersinger and at the right the "Ride of the Valkyries" theme from Die Walküre. He has signed boldly between the two quotations and dated Edinburgh October 21 1896. Trimmed from a small album leaf to 5 x 1.5 inches 12.8 x 4.2 cm. In very fine condition.<br> unknown books

Elegant letter signed "Cosima" by the daughter of Franz Liszt second wife of Richard Wagner and director of the Bayreuth Festival for 31 years. This letter thanks a friend for sending her clothing measurements and giving her carte blanche for both color and make of an item of clothing. She also writes that the children's maid has gone away leaving her to do the washing hairdressing clothing playing teaching running up and down stairs like a rat ".je lave je coiffe j'habille je joue j'enseigne je cours comme un rat a travers les escaliers.". Rather scarce novel illuminating a "daring" theme that was "completely new to fiction" -- i.e. artificial insemination. "Cindy Gaylord was in her second year of college when tragedy broke the rhythm of her young life. She was beautiful and rich but neither of these assets was of help to her when her father was murdered. The sordidness of the trial and the defection of her fiance brought complete disillusionment and Cindy's reaction to the corroding bitterness was utter revulsion toward men. She inherited her father's flair for finance and his deep love of music which offered her much solace in her dark hours. A chance discussion gave Cindy her first knowledge of trends in modern science toward reproduction through scientific means. When Mrs. Gaylord died Cindy felt she must have someone to care for and love and in desperation turned to Science." And what do we make of an author named Wagner who writes a book in which a music-loving mother cites "Die Niebelungen" and names her scientifically-implanted child "Siegfried" I took a good close look just to see if this book was "translated from the German" but nope; and according to the copyright page the author's full name was Dorothy Wagner Nelson. . The novel is centered around Cindy Gaylord a wealthy young woman whose father is murdered while carrying on an affair. Deserted by her fiancé she grows to hate men and the way they are "degraded by the passion Nature has cursed him with." p.95. She attempts to manipulate the stock market in an attempt to ruin the man who shot her father; having succeeded and added substantially to her wealth she desires to satisfy her maternal urge through the means of artificial insemination noting "the individual doesn't count. It's on the race that's important. I'm willing to pay the man well if I can be sure he's American-born of Anglo-Saxon origin. And of course physically and mentally sound" pp.233-234.
