015073Agathon Guinement, chevalier de Keralio (1723-1788), officier, gouverneur de Charles II Auguste duc Palatin de Deux-Ponts et de Maximilien 1er roi de Bavière. L.A.S., Paris, 29 janvier 1762, 4p in-4. Très intéressante lettre à Françoise de Palatinat-Soulzbach (1724-1794), épouse du comte palatin de Deux-Ponts-Birkenfeld. « Il est vrai que je me suis avisé de donner des conseils à mr votre fils qui, suivant ce que tout le monde m'en dit, n'en a aucun besoin, mais depuis six mois, je ne fais autre chose que prêcher et l'habitude m'a emporté : oui, madame, je suis devenu prédicateur, vous me diez que je suis un singulier apôtre, quoiqu'il en soit, je travaille à une conversion qui a ses difficultés, mais j'espère y réussir : j'ai trouvé dans mon chemin tous les défauts que l'on peut avoir à quinze ans ». Keralio est en effet gouverneur de ses enfants depuis mai 1761 et il est question ici de l'aîné, Charles II Auguste, futur duc Palatin de Deux-Ponts. Il a « brisé son caractère » et arrivera à d'autres « triomphes ». Il est ensuite question du marquis d'Etampes (Louis-Dominique (1734-1815)?), de Voltaire : « J'ai vu L'Ecueil du Sage. Tout le monde convient que c'est une pièce détestable. La fable m'en a paru mal tenue, les situations forcées, la plaisanterie visant à l'obscénité : on peut en fait une attelage avec Zulime : malgré ces revers, Voltaire n'abandonne point la scène, nous allons avoir de cet auteur inépuisable deux tragédies, Cassandre et Pierre le cruel. Il parait un Sermon du Rabin Akib, prêché à Smyrne, que je crois de lui. C'est un des écrits les plus forts que j'aie lu contre la religion ». Cassandre est en fait sa pièce Olympie créée le 14 mars 1764 et Pierre le Cruel est Don Pèdre publié en 1775 et non représentée. Puis sur Paul-René du Truche de La Chaux, condamné pour avoir prétendu avoir fait fuir deux individus voulant assassiner Louis XV et s'être mutilé pour rendre la chose crédible : « Le châtelet a condamné ce garde du corps dont vous avez surement entendu parler à être rompu vif. Il y a appel au parlement ». La fin de la lettre concerne des nouvelles militaires. Très belle lettre émanant d'une personne bien renseignée sur Voltaire. Il est à noter que son frère, Louis-Félix de Keralio, était en correspondance avec Voltaire. [368]
