1980629Ares Publishers Inc. . 1980. Hardcover. Fine in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Exact Reprint of the Tetypeset original 1809 Chicago 1930 ARES PUBLISHERS INC. In his school edict Julian prohibits Christian teachers from using pagan scripts e. G. The Illias that formed the core of Roman education. This was an attempt to remove some of the power of Christian schools by alienating their students from Roman society not to mention a satirical attack at what Julian may have viewed as a hypocrisy: Christian schools teaching the Bible as the sole source of knowledge while simultaneously teaching classical pagan texts as well knowledge of which was needed for success in Roman society. In his tolerance edict of 362 Julian decreed the reopening of pagan temples the restitution of alienated temple properties and called back Christian bishops that were exiled by church edicts. The latter was an instance of tolerance of different religious views but may also have been an attempt by Julian to widen a schism between different Christian sects further weakening the Christian movement as a whole.; 8.25 x 0.5 x 5.5 Inches; 119 pages . 0890053014 . 20107548Franz Steiner Verlag. 2010. Hardcover. Fine in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Historia - Einzelschriften 210; 458 pages; English summary: The Roman Empire knew no institutionalized process that governed the transfer of power at the head of the empire. A change of government thus often led to crisis situations. Joachim Szidat examines elevations and usurpations of emperors in late antiquity after 337 through to the end of the western Empire in 476. Moreover he illuminates the time of the tetrarchy and the early Byzantine era up through the middle of the 6th Century. Starting from the analysis of individual cases of exemplary transfers of power the author works out the general processes in the seizure of power and their political and social circumstances and conditions. As crucial for the transfer and assurance of rule appears to be the role of the new political leadership particularly emphasizing the great importance of civilian dignitaries that developed during the rule of Constantine. The usurpation therefore constituted a political rather than military problem: the new claimant to power had to be recognized. German text. . 3515096361 . Franz Steiner Verlag hardcover

Very light shelfwear to book else Fine.; 568 pages; While the monarchy established by Caesar Augustus has attracted much scholarly attention far less has been said about the reemergence of the old nobility at that time after years of civil war. One clear reason for this has been the lack of reliable evidence from the period. This book goes backward to the early years of the first century B. C. And forward to the reign of Nero in search of documentation of the Augustan aristocracy. Syme draws particularly on the Annals of Tacitus to cover 150 years in the history of Roman families chronicling their splendor and success as well as their subsequent fall within the embrace of the dynasty. . 0198148593 .
