1916H8242Boston: The Stratford Company 1916. Hardcover. Very Good. First American edition. 8vo red cloth light wear and soil spine faded. Inscribed on the pastedown to Sidney Lanier Jr. from the translator also signed on the flyleaf "Bravo Lista!" by Enrico Caruso and inscribed also very fondly on the half title to Lanier from the translator "With Compliments of the Country Cobbler and Translator dated January 2nd 1917. The recipient Sidney Lanier Jr. was the son of a famous Confederate poet and musician who died in 1881. Sidney ran an interesting camp in Eliot Maine. According to the website Mainmemories: "At Camp Sidney Lanier in Eliot campers acted out Bible dramas written by Sidney Lanier Jr. 1870-1918 every Sunday in the woods. Lanier using ideas developed by his father poet Sidney Lanier Sr. 1870-1918 attempted to teach children the "art of living." They participated in a strict routine of music crafts nature study and other activities. Children went through a hierarchy of types of social organization to reach the highest form which was spiritual and represented by farm and home. " Finally at the end of the book a blank page is inscribed from Elizabeth Sidney's spouse Lanier to her grandson explaining the connection between Burt the editor of the book and the Lanier family; this inscription is dated 1933. A great association copy of this particular book. We don’t know the circumstances in which Enrico Caruso signed this book other than that Lista and De Amicis were both of Italian extraction and that the tale of the close connection between De Amicis and his dog would have resonated with Caruso who also loved dogs and whose dog Puck often traveled with him. "The winning quality of the sound the tender mezza voce particularly in the early years and his phrasing based on a rare mastery of legato and portamento enabled Caruso to sing the French and Italian lyric repertory as well as lighter operas. In addition his noble incisive declamation his broad generous phrasing and his vigor in dramatic outbursts made him a notable interpreter of Verdi as well as of French grand opéra. In this repertory his performances were characterized by the irresistible erotic appeal of his timbre allied to a temperament as warm and vehement as his voice. His numerous recordings now faithfully remastered on CD not only made him universally famous they also did much to encourage the acceptance of recording as a medium for opera." 1976158764
Toronto: Seripress 1976. Edition of 20 numbered copies of which this is copy no. 16. Fine. 8 serigraphs numbered and signed by artist. Tissue guard for each print. Title and series page. In black card folder and white card slipcase. 26 cm.

Seripress was intended solely for the publication of concrete and visual poetry. Most of the titles were silkscreened throughout which enabled the artist to use colour if required. When colours were used Caruso mixed them herself. She also cut letters by hand. The hand-cut images and letters were placed on profilm sheets a lacquer gel on plastic to make a stencil which would then be fixed to the silk screen of the press. The pages were hand-printed; Caruso didn't use photo-silkscreen methods. After each title was printed the profilm stencil was dissolved from the screen ensuring the title couldn't be printed again using that plate. Even the folders were handmade by the artist.
Seripress

While Caruso's self-caricatures are possibly the most desirable to opera collectors his often insightful drawings of composers singers conductors etc. are also valuable iconographical records. See Sisca: Caruso's Caricatures NY Dover 1977 for a comprehensive overview of the caricatures.

"The famous tenor Caruso was a skilled amateur caricaturist who portrayed himself in operatic roles and drew humorous portraits of friends as a release from his stressful professional life. Since 1903 Caruso had lived in New York for part of each year while performing at the Metropolitan Opera and sent opera-related caricatures to La Follia a local Italian-language newspaper." Website of The Metropolitan Opera New York

"With his original treatment of traditional forms his highly inventive approach to musical drama and his importance as a teacher and writer Paul Dukas occupies a central position in French musical history. Dukas was not only an influence on many French 20th-century composers and others such as Zemlinsky and Berg but also remains important in his own right. His reputation rests on only a small number of compositions notably the Piano Sonata Ariane et Barbe-bleue the ballet La Péri and L'apprenti sorcier. Dukas's influence as a critic from 1892 to 1932 can be compared with Debussy's; his informed opinions reveal great sensitivity to the musical and aesthetic changes that took place during the period."
