Book is in excellent condition with a little shelf wear to covers only. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Dust jacket shows very slight edge and corner wear, no tears. 109 pages of full page photos, about a thrid of which are in color, almost all of these being mosaics very rich in gold, detail, the Last Supper, etc. The b&w photos are of Venice proper, sculpture, bridges, canals, boats, facades, architectural detail.

This is the first book written by Charles Eliot Norton (1827-1908), the famed American scholar and educator. As professor of the history of art at Harvard (1875-98) and as a man of letters he had a stimulating influence on his time. This account of his Italian travels (1855-1857) in journal form was first published in 1859. Concentrating on Italian history and art, it covers: the Italian Riviera; Genoa; Florence; Rome; Naples; Etc. Norton also has some unkind things to say about the Roman Church and Papal Government. La mostra propone la rappresentazione per immagini della lunghezza e della complessità della storia che accomuna i nostri Paesi, all'interno di quella cornice, straordinaria per varietà e ricchezza, che e il Mediterraneo. Per secoli, Venezia ha rappresentato per l'Europa la Porta d'Oriente, attraverso cui e stato possibile diffondere la conoscenza degli usi e dei costumi dell'Impero Ottomano. Ma e anche vero il contrario: quando la Sublime Porta ha avuto bisogno di rimarcare la sua prossimità con la cultura europea, e a Venezia che ha fatto ricorso. Questo e quello che fece, infatti, Maometto II, il conquistatore di Costantinopoli, quando chiamò alla sua corte il pittore veneziano Gentile Bellini. L'arte e il commercio rappresentarono i pilastri essenziali di questo rapporto fecondo, attraverso il quale con il tempo furono superate le distanze e diminuirono le diffidenze reciproche. Le relazioni non furono sempre pacifiche, come sappiamo. Venezia fece per esempio parte della coalizione di forze europee che inflisse all'Impero Ottomano la prima sconfitta sul suolo europeo, nel 1683. La stessa fine della Repubblica di Venezia, che avvenne nel 1797 con il Trattato di Campoformio, ebbe conseguenze inattese anche sull'Impero Ottomano.
