With fine early nineteenth century engraved armorial bookplate bearing the widespread motto 'pro aris et focis'. This scarce work contains the twenty-four prayers and orisons of the Armenian patriarch Nerses IV (1102-1173). Effectively a type specimen book, it was printed at the Armenian monastery on the isle of St. Lazarus off Venice and presents the prayers in no fewer than 24 different languages, including Dutch, Gaelic, Hungarian, Spanish and Russian. The collection was first issued in 1818 with the prayers present in fourteen languages; a fourth edition (1837) was several times reprinted. Brunet IV, 859; Nersessian 510.

This is the first book written by Charles Eliot Norton (1827-1908), the famed American scholar and educator. As professor of the history of art at Harvard (1875-98) and as a man of letters he had a stimulating influence on his time. This account of his Italian travels (1855-1857) in journal form was first published in 1859. Concentrating on Italian history and art, it covers: the Italian Riviera; Genoa; Florence; Rome; Naples; Etc. Norton also has some unkind things to say about the Roman Church and Papal Government. Description of the history, significance and restoration of the Horses mounted on St.Mark's Basilica in Venice. The bronze sculptures date from classical antiquity, were displayed at the Hippodrome of Constantinople until 1204 when they were looted by Venetians,. stolen by Napoleon in 1797 and returned to Venice in 1815. Ongoing damage from air pollution forced their replacement with exact copies and the originals placed on display inside the basilica.The restoration work on them is described.
