Wear to extremities of binding and gilding on spine somewhat abraded, but structurally solid and still attractive. Large margins. Internally bright and fine except for a couple minor spots. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Modern cloth bdg. Small 4to. (26 x 19 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 24 p. First edition of this epic and historically important account, describing the siege and fall of the Byzantine Empire and Constantinople by Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II in 1453. This is one of the finest literary examples of sixteenth-century Ottoman prose. "This description of the conquest of Istanbul in 1453 is mentioned only by Ismail Pasha in his "Hediyyetü'l Arifîn". The text, which was published as a supplement to TOEM (parts 20 and 21, Istanbul 1331) is said to be taken from a manuscript owned by Halis Efendi. The introduction to Ca'fer Çelebi's life was also written by Halis Efendi. The work is written in a very elegant style, with ayets, hadith, and beyts in Arabic, Persian, and Turkish scattered throughout the text and may be considered one of the finest examples of sixteenth-century Ottoman prose writing. [.] Ca'fer's work is in some aspects a reliable source for the conquest of Istanbul. The preparation for the siege is given in this work. The council of war which was held before the siege and in particular Mehmed II's speech to the council is very detailed and the chain placed across the entrance to the Golden Horn and its history is very well described in this work as well. During the siege, the Byzantines received help from the outside. Ca'fer is specific about this and states that "four huge vessels full of provisions, soldiers and ammunition came to help of the Byzantines". After the last attack, Constantinople fell into the hands of the Ottoman army. The date given for this is 857 Cem. I. 20 Seshenbe in Ca'fer's work. The plundering and looting which occurred during the first three days of the conquest are vividly described by Ca'fer Çelebi, but the withdrawal of Justinian and his men which preceded the conquest and the death of the Byzantine Emperor during the capture of the city are omitted in this work. Ca'fer's closing lines are devoted to the conversion of St. Sophia (Ayasofya) into a mosque by Mehmed II. Ca'fer Çelebi used eyewitness accounts as well as written works. It is certain that he did not rely exclusively on any source which is not extant, for the departs from Ruhi, Enverî, Tursun Beg, Neshrî, and Asikpasha-zâde either by adding new information or giving a conflicting account." Il testo è in italiano e in latino, incorniciato pagina per pagina in fregi xilografici, con anche le iniziali figurate e finalini. “I consoli dei comuni italiani giuravano, all'atto di assumere il potere, certi capitoli nei quali erano comprese da un lato regole riguardanti la condotta politica, dall'altro norme concernenti l'esercizio della giurisdizione. [...] Così a Venezia vediamo il doge giurare le "promissioni", delle quali la più celebre, quella che si mantenne sino alla caduta, è di natura politica; accanto però ad una riguardante la giurisdizione criminale. [...] La promissione ducale di natura politica contiene [...] una serie di promesse di governare e giudicare rettamente, di serbare il segreto sugli affari di stato, di eseguire le deliberazioni del consiglio e così via; ma, sin dalla prima che ci è conservata, cioè quella del doge Enrico Dandolo, del 1193, contiene pure una serie di restrizioni al potere ducale, come quella di non corrispondere direttamente col papa né con altri principi, di non intromettersi nella nomina del patriarca, di non disporre dei beni del comune, ecc.” (Treccani). Le promissioni sono cinque e seicentesche: la più recente fra tutte porta la data del 1656. L’insieme di queste regole, oltre a chiarire i precetti ducali, costituisce un interessante punto di vista su diversi aspetti della cultura e dell’economia veneziana in questi due secoli. Le indicazioni contenute sono infatti di vario genere e comprendono i campi più disparati, come per esempio l’abbigliamento, la vita coniugale e il nepotismo (negli anni si intensificano le regole per prevenire un esito di ereditarietà della carica ducale - che era notoriamente elettiva), i commerci, arredi e competenze urbanistiche, politiche monetarie, ecc. Questa copia non è conforme a quelle presenti nelle biblioteche italiane: manca la carta A1, come premesso, ma fuori segnatura ci sono pagine di testo non descritte nei cataloghi, e peraltro non numerate né indicizzate (l’indice si trova alla fine). Full vellum, leaf A1 missing. The text, in Italian and Latin, is framed at every page in xilographic ornaments. The “promissioni” were the collection of rules and laws that the Venetian Dukes had to swear on, when put in charge. The most recent of the “promissioni” here gathered is from 1656; this text, beyond the importance about Venice government, is an important and original point of view about many aspects of the venitian culture and economy. The directions include many fields, from the clothing to married life and nepotism (during these years the rules to prevent the heredity of Duke’s office are enhanced), commerce, furnitures, architecture, politics, money, etc. This copy is different from the ones preserved in Italian libraries: there are text pages off the signature and numbering, and not indexed (the index is in the final part of book).
