1870List36105N.p. 1870. Carte After the original photograph by William Edward Kilburn 1818–1891 taken circa 1854 with later CDV issue probably circa 1870s. Albumen print mounted on card; sitter identified in print beneath image. Standard carte-de-visite format approximately 2½ x 4 inches. Excellent contrast with light surface wear. Seated three-quarter portrait of Nightingale in dark silk dress with white collar hands folded over a paper posed beside an upholstered Victorian chair. The image derives from a sitting arranged in London with William Edward Kilburn one of Britain’s early professional photographers and a former daguerreotypist who gained fame by exhibiting at the Great Exhibition of 1851. By the early 1850s Kilburn had established a reputation for photographing members of the aristocracy and prominent public figures.<br /> <br /> The Nightingale sitting happened shortly before her departure for the Crimea in October 1854 at a moment when her name was just entering the public press. The portrait predates her full transformation into the national icon later known as the “Lady with the Lamp.†Unlike later more romanticized images Kilburn’s photograph presents a composed unsentimental likeness more consistent with standard portraiture practices than her later photographs. Following Nightingale’s wartime service at Scutari 1854–1856 and the subsequent surge of public acclaim Kilburn’s image became the primary photographic source from which engravings lithographs and later carte-de-visite reproductions were made.1<br /> <br /> 1 Denis Pellerin “Florence Nightingale: The Mystery Behind Her Iconic Photographs†The Classic November 15 2020 https://theclassicphotomag.com/florence-nightingale-the-mysteries-behind-her-iconic-photographs/ accessed February 27 2026. unknown

1930ZZ1731New York:: Charles Scribner's Sons 1930. 1930. 8vo. xii 160 pp. Frontis. port. of Osborn plates index. Burgundy cloth gilt-stamped cover and spine titles dust-jacket; jacket worn and stained with some tape repair. Very good. GEORGE R. MINOT'S COPY 1934 NOBEL PRIZE WINNER. Dr. George R. Minot's copy with the Author's presentation inscription: "To Dr. George R. Minot; In memory of Charles Sedgwick Minot & Dr. George R. Minot- with the best wishes of Henry Fairfield Osborn December 18th 1930 Congratulations on the well-deserved award." Minot was awarded the 1934 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine which he shared with William P. Murphy and George H. Whipple. The reference to the "award" in the inscription was not to the Noble Prize which came to Minot in 1934. Also in the inscription the use of the phrase "In memory of" certainly applied to Charles Sedgwick Minot who died in 1914 but not to George since he died in 1955. Osborn himself died in 1935. Two earlier editions of the bibliography had been published the first for the period 1877-1910 and the second for the period 1911-1918. Both were compiled by Harriet Ernestine Ripley and continued thereafter by Janette May Lucas. This bibliography is identified in the text as the third edition but it is the first edition of the complete bibliography. A special copy in every respect. Charles Scribner's Sons, 1930. hardcover

Boldly signed and in excellent condition. From the archive and papers of Samuel French & Son's.<br/><br/> RYERSON Florence 1892 - 2013 1965 American playwright best remembered as the co-author of the screenplay for the 1939 classic film The Wizard of Oz. Her contributions were numerous including the creation of the multi-roles of actor Frank Morgan who played the Wizard and Ryerson's invented character Mr. Marvel. She also focused the story almost entirely on Dorothy's desire to return home and the Wicked Witch's desire to possess the Ruby Red Slippers. It was her script that introduced the blatant "There's No Place like Home" motif to the film: In order to return to Kansas Dorothy must click the Ruby Red Slippers together and say three times; "There's No Place Like Home". It was also her idea that Dorothy first melted the Wicked Witch by accident because the witch was attempting to set fire to the Scarecrow an idea that preserved Dorothy's purity of motive.<br/><br/> unknown books
16430071411643. No Binding. Very Good. Original etching on laid paper circular composition ca. 1643-48. Sheet size approx. 145 x 140 mm. A spirited etching of Bacchanalian Scene with Satyrs and Musicians by Stefano della Bella depicting a lively bacchanalian scene with satyrs and children engaged in music and dance within a wooded landscape. The animated figures fluid movement and delicately balanced composition exemplify della Bella's characteristic lightness of touch and his gift for narrative charm. The circular format enhances the sense of intimacy and rhythmic motion while the fine controlled line work reflects the artist's mastery of engraving and etching. Della Bella was one of the most accomplished printmakers of the Italian Baroque admired for his imaginative pastoral and mythological scenes and influential in both Italy and France. Good overall condition for 17th century print. Light even toning consistent with age and paper type. Minor surface soling and faint scattered foxing primarily in the margins.
