Sm 4to paperback bound in the traditional Japanese method in lightly textured pale gray wraps with white title label with black text to front cover. 41pp. Intermittent color and B/W plates. Fair. Exlib with call number near spine and crossed out on title page and stamps crossed out on inside front and rear covers and on author's photo. Spine and edges of wraps have been bound with blue fabric tape; the call number and a spine title are written on this tape. Tape has offset to endpages as has some ink from inside cover stamp. Minor adhesion damage to margins of title page and more heavily to rear author's bio page and inside rear cover. Breese Jim / How fortunate and happy I have been / Florence." <br /> <br /> Welch worked as a newspaper journalist and activist for women's suffrage in Topeka Kansas later moving to California and marrying prominent artist and writer Rob Wagner. In 1929 the pair founded "Script" a left-leaning weekly literary film magazine that often published interviews and articles concerning progressive and radical topics in Hollywood. Welch has also been credited as an early supporter of writers William Saroyan and Ray Bradbury publishing their work extensively in the magazine. He was a follower of Girolamo Savonarola and an opponent of the Medici. During the restoration of the Florentine Republic he held important positions, but with the return of the Medici (1530), he had to leave the city, repairing first in Livorno and then in Venice. He wrote carnival songs, comedies and, in maturity, works of history and erudition. He was inspired by Machiavelli's values of freedom and was a friend of Benedetto Varchi.

Scene depicting Edward Gray "bitterly weeping" with his head in his hands at the grave of his lost love Emma Morland on the hillside with lowering clouds above. Mounted. Fine. Annotation in pencil above illustration "Tennyson Edward Gray" and "Tailpiece Edward Gray" below both concealed by mount. Tailpiece illustration by Harrison from the Blackie edition of Tennyson's "Guinevere and Other Poems" from poem "Edward Gray". Florence Susan Harrison 1877-1955 the British artist attended the Glasgow School of Art where she developed her distinctive style and gained notoriety as one of the Glasgow Girls. She illustrated the works of Tennyson Christina Rosetti and William Morris and lived in London where her work was exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1887-1891. Recent research shows that work previously attributed to Emma Florence Harrison is in fact by Florence Susan Harrison and that the earlier attribution was spurious. unknown

Upton series of 'Golliwogg' books which began with " The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls " which was published for Christmas 1895 with the title updated to The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls and a "Golliwogg" in the second printing. also1895. From 1894 to 1909 Florence and her mother created a total of thirteen titles following the adventures of the happy-go-lucky Golly until changing tastes made 'Golliwogg in the African Jungle' the last in the series. To raise money for the Red Cross she donated her dolls and much of her artwork for auction in 1917 and they subsequently spent many years at Chequers before ending up at the V & A Museum of Childhood. "The Golliwogg's Bicycle Club" was the Second Book published in 1896 and though there is NO Date on the Mug T & R Boote's 'Ship' logo on the base of the MUG was a style used by the firm between c.1890 - 1906. So it is likely contemporary with the book. Length is around 14cm 5.5 inches and height is c.9cm 3.5 inches . Florence K. Upton Golliwogg china wares are pretty rare and to have a COMPLETE Unrepaired Shaving Mug with bright colouring is even Rare. A Delightful piece of Golliwogg Ephemera.
