1928y0085New York: Macmillan 1928. Two large hardcovers in jackets as pictured; the first American edition first printings "Published November 1928" and "April 1930" noting no later printings. Stoker's works are the literary cornerstore of our cultural understanding of the mythology of vampires. The status of Dracula's Guest is a source of disagreement among scholars: some believe it was originally intended as the first chapter of Dracula but excised from the final work; others that it was based on notes related to that work's first few chapters. Though the setting is Munich - not Transylvania - the unnamed protagonist may yet be Jonathan Harker. It was originally released in 1914 at the behest of Stoker's widow two years after his death as part of the collection Dracula's Guest and Other Weird Stories. It was not published in the United States until nearly 25 years later in the edition offered here which preserves the same contents but changes the order of the stories. Includes: Preface by Florence Stoker; Dracula's Guest; The Judge's House; The Burial of the Rats; The Squaw; The Secret of the Growing Gold; The Coming of Abel Behenna; Crooken Sands; A Dream of Red Hands; A Gypsy Prophecy. Though David Selznick bought the film rights in 1933 the motion picture he released in 1936 under the title Dracula's Daughter bears no resemblance to the Dracula story included here. While the rest of the volume's stories do not feature vampires they are grim and sometimes gruesome horror stories in their own right and an interesting foil for the much different style of Dracula which was an epistolary novel. 19011760London New York & Bombay: Longmans Green and Co 1901. Boards. Very good. Florence K. UPTON. STIGMATIZING ILLUSTRATIONS RHYMING VERSE WOMAN AUTHOR WOMAN ILLUSTRATOR.
8vo oblong 8 5/8" x 11"; 66pp; color pictorial boards a Golliwog and two Dutch dolls in a go-cart on front; quarter-bound green cloth; color patterned endpapers with swans and sailing ships lacking rear free endpaper; color vignette of a Dutch doll on title page; 31 full-page color illustrations; text and line drawings in sepia; wear and light soiling to boards with loss at corners spot on front board last page has age-toning lacking rear ep; very good minus. The story follows a Golliwogg and its Dutch doll companions as they go on an adventure in a go-cart. The Golliwogg character a Black doll with wild hair large white eyes and bright red lips was invented and popularized in Europe by the writings of Florence Kate Upton 1873-1922 and was based on the Black minstrel doll she owned in her youth. The Jim Crow Museum Big Rapids Michigan classifies the character as a "caricature of a caricature." The Dutch dolls were penny-wooden dolls popular because of their jointed limbs and inexpensive prince. This book was part of a series of 13 Golliwogg stories popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and illustrated by Florence Upton and written by her mother Bertha. Golliwoggs later appeared in stories by other authors and as dolls and other children's toys. Longmans, Green and Co unknown

19281623London: Macmillan & Co. Limited 1928 & 1930. First Edition First Printing. Hardcover. pp. xii 1 327; xi 1 286 2 pages of publisher's advertisements. Royal 8vo. Bound in lovely light green cloth over boards with gilt lettering and circular floral motif to the centre of the front boards and spines. Gilt top-edge. Black and white lithographed frontispieces depicting a young and old Thomas Hardy and accompanied with their original tissue-guards. Replete with black and white photographs illustrations and even a two-page lovely facsimile of a hand-written letter by the author; all accompanied with their original tissue-guards. Slightest bumping to the spine ends otherwise no detectable flaws with the contents remaining bright clean and unmarked with tight sound binding; housed in excellent dust-jackets not price-clipped and bearing the original cost of "18/-net" showing only the slightest traces of edgewear both dust-jackets now housed in protective mylar covers. Overall a very handsome presentation. Rare in commerce in the first printing and in this condition. We note from Richard Little Purdy who writes in 'Hardy: A Bibliographical Study' p. 265-73 that "the work was an "innocent deception" and he further observed that "The Early Life of Thomas Hardy is in reality an autobiography. Though Mrs Hardy's name stands on the title-page her work was confined to a few editorial touches and the writing is throughout Hardy's own . The Later Years of Thomas Hardy was largely written by Hardy himself under the same circumstances as The Early Life . It was not carried beyond the year 1918 however which may give some clue to the date of composition and the four concluding chapters are Mrs Hardy's work".

Macmillan & Co., Limited hardcover
