Edward St. John Gorey 1925-2000 is well-known and well-loved for his poisonously funny picture books which are complex humorous serious and provocative. In this work Treehorn was shrinking.and he didn't know why.as the publisher says on the dust jacket flap: "With his usual tongue-in-cheek approach Edward Gorey glorifies the many imaginings of the story in witty pen and ink drawings." The book would win the New York Times Illustrated Book of the Year Award for 1971 with the reviewer stating: "The spare orderly illustrations counterpoint the garrulous text and thereby the vacuum in the middle of the child's life is chillingly and hilariously conveyed" n.b. from the web site of the New York Times. ___DESCRIPTION: Cloth-covered boards of green with illustrations in black and white and black lettering decorative boards on the title page signed by Gorey on the title page in his usual manner of putting a line through his printed name and signing above in black ink the story unfolds with text on the left verso and illustrations on the right recto; oblong sixmo size 6 1/4" by 7 1/8" unpaginated with thirty-two printed leaves. Dust jacket shows the original price of $3.95 and mirrors the design of the book on the panels and spine the front flap with a short summary of the book the back flap with short bios of the author and artist. ___CONDITION: Volume could almost be deemed fine; the binding is clean other than a speck or two the corners are perfectly straight with just a hint of rubbing the text block is strong and square with solid hinges the pages are clean and bright and the book is free of prior owner markings.
