This is the first book written by Charles Eliot Norton (1827-1908), the famed American scholar and educator. As professor of the history of art at Harvard (1875-98) and as a man of letters he had a stimulating influence on his time. This account of his Italian travels (1855-1857) in journal form was first published in 1859. Concentrating on Italian history and art, it covers: the Italian Riviera; Genoa; Florence; Rome; Naples; Etc. Norton also has some unkind things to say about the Roman Church and Papal Government. He was a follower of Girolamo Savonarola and an opponent of the Medici. During the restoration of the Florentine Republic he held important positions, but with the return of the Medici (1530), he had to leave the city, repairing first in Livorno and then in Venice. He wrote carnival songs, comedies and, in maturity, works of history and erudition. He was inspired by Machiavelli's values of freedom and was a friend of Benedetto Varchi.
