Besides his energetic parochial work he was known for his writing and philosophy founding the Edinburgh Review and lecturing at the Royal Institution. He is also remembered for his rhyming recipe for salad dressing. Written by his daughter Lady Saba Holland the second wife of Sir Henry Holland. She made a name for herself as the author of this much-read memoir of her famous father. With a selection from his letters edited by Sarah Austin an English editor linguist and translator who wrote as Mrs. Austin. In the original half calf binding. Externally sound with rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Volume one has been rebacked with the original spine laid down. The odd mark to the boards. Hinges starting but firm. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting predominantly to the first and last few pages. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown.
