Circa 1889 Day became intrigued with the French author Balzac and during a trip to Paris painted three watercolors while he was researching Balzac and making connections with other artists and authors. As well he photographed these houses and some of those original prints still turn up on the market. This is a wonderful watercolor painting of a house which probably captured his eye based on its whimsical architecture as well as the placard affixed to the front which reads “Defense D’Afficher†a phrase coined in the 1700’s which basically means “do not post any advertisements here.†A wonderful watercolor executed by F. Holland Day an avid publisher book collector and photographer F. Holland Day was a dedicated aesthete and well-known figure in turn-of-the-century Boston. He was one of the earliest advocates of Pictorial photography in America and like Alfred Stieglitz with whom he corresponded until they had a serious disagreement around 1902 he tirelessly wrote articles mounted exhibitions and encouraged like-minded photographers who supported the medium’s artistic potential. Fine condition. Matted in a glass frame with a smaller window which hides the bottom inch or so unpainted area. A rare and historically significant watercolor painting by this polyglot of photography book publishing and art. unknown

He survived shipwreck and disaster only to be imprisoned for violating the terms of his scientific passport by changing ships and carrying prohibited papers. A noter, la décharge dans la marge haute d'un ancien marque page (brunissure sur deux pages cote à cote). légères salissures aux témoins. Les deux plats de couverture ainsi que le dos du brochage ont été conservés en parfait état. Volume en grande partie non coupé (jamais lu). Edition originale. Tirage de tête sur papier de Hollande. Un des 10 exemplaires sur ce papier. Il a été tiré en outre 10 exemplaires sur papier du Japon. Cet ouvrage est dédié "aux aveugles pour aider au défrichement de leurs ténèbres et aux clairvoyants pour déraciner les préjugés séculaires, j'offre cette oeuvre d'émancipation sociale et de réconfort." Les Emmurés, qui paraît en 1894, incarne pleinement l'attention que Lucien Descaves a portée durant toute sa vie aux exclus de la société. Le roman épouse la condition quotidienne des aveugles et l'on y retrouve un aspect quasi documentaire, qui ne craint pas le souci du détail comme c'était déjà le cas dans Sous-Offs. Les Emmurés révèle un pan ignoré du peuple de Paris, très peu de récits avant lui ayant décrit l'existence de ceux qui ne voient pas (le texte le plus connu à leur être consacré est la célèbre Lettre sur les aveugles de Diderot). Ce sont leurs conditions matérielles, morales et affectives que veut dépeindre ici Lucien Descaves et comme pour ses autres livres, il s'y attache à la manière qui le caractérise : avec une scrupuleuse sincérité. (Présentation, Les emmurés, éditions La Part Commune, 2009). Lucien Descaves (1861-1949) est un auteur mal connu. Il a pourtant été une figure importante de la vie littéraire de son temps. Romancier et dramaturge prolifique, mais aussi journaliste, chroniqueur et préfacier, il fut l'ami proche ainsi que l'exécuteur testamentaire de J-K. Huysmans et son chemin croisa, entre beaucoup d'autres, celui d'Émile Zola, Léon Bloy ou L.-F Céline. Bon exemplaire du très rare tirage de tête sur papier de Hollande.

This work is the extremely scarce privately circulated copy of the memoir 1854 which was first published in 1855. Undated dated using Copac. Printed by John Edward Taylor Little Queen Street. Written by his daughter Lady Saba Holland the second wife of Sir Henry Holland. Lady Holland made a name for herself in the literary sphere by penning this carefully written memoir of her father. Sydney Smith published several sermons and religious work. His reputation among contemporaries was that of a humorist. He was known to make jest of religious subjects and is known in the United States for his rhyming recipe for salad dressing. With the bookplate of Hon. Francis C Bridgeman to the front pastedown. Bridgeman was a British Army officer and Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1885-1895. His crest to the tail of the spine. In a half morocco binding with cloth covered boards. Externally very smart with a small amount of rubbing to the rear joint and to the head and tail of spine. Slightly heavier rubbing to the front joint. Minor rubbing to the extremities. Small amount of damp staining to the rear board. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown Francis C Bridgeman. Library plate to the front pastedown. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Internally firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned with the odd spot throughout. Reliure de l'époque demi-maroquin prune, dos à nerfs, auteur, titre et millésime dorés, tête dorée, non rogné pour les autres tranches, couvertures jaunes imprimées conservées (les deux plats et le dos). Reliure signée DUPRÉ. Très bel état de conservation. Nouvelle édition. Tirage de luxe à 50 exemplaires sur papier de Hollande (n°36) numérotés au composteur. L'édition originale du roman le plus célèbre de l'auteur a paru en 1882. Il s'agit ici d'une nouvelle édition parue peu après la sortie de l'adaptation théâtrale qui connut un énorme succès. C'est une histoire sentimentale se déroulant dans un cadre bourgeois, utilisant les recettes du mélodrame et du feuilleton. Le Maître de forges a été adapté pour le théâtre par Ohnet lui-même dès l'année suivante (1883). Créée au théâtre du Gymnase, la pièce connaîtra la célébrité, avec plus de 271 représentations en quelques mois : « un immense succès d’intérêt, d’émotions et de larmes », écrira-t-on dans Le Figaro le lendemain de la première[réf. nécessaire]. Succès qui dépassera même les frontières de la France puisque la pièce sera jouée à Saint-Pétersbourg et à Londres. Quatre familles sont mises en scène, de Beaulieu, noblesse dont la ruine subite intervient au début du film, Derblay, industriel historique maitre de forges, de Bligny, grande noblesse oisive et dépensière, et Moulinet, très riche industriel parvenu et sans éducation. Entre ces personnages va se jouer un ballet de calculs matrimoniaux, d'espoir déçus, de regrets, de tromperies, de résignation, de jalousie et de perfidie. Claire de Beaulieu, riche héritière, devait épouser le duc de Bligny, mais apprenant sa ruine, le duc s'écarte d'elle et préfère la riche Athénaïs Moulinet dont le père, jouant de sa fortune, ferait tout pour accéder au beau monde. Claire, qui est tenue ignorante de sa ruine, accepte par dépit la demande en mariage de Philippe Derblay. Claire et Athénaïs se sont connues adolescentes en pension et ont toujours été rivales. Claire n'aime pas Philippe et ce dernier est déçu de ce mariage, ils vont vivre sans se parler, mais peu à peu Claire se rapproche de lui jusqu'à comprendre sa grandeur d'âme. Georges Ohnet (1848-1918) tout d'abord journaliste et auteur de théâtre, c'est en écrivant la saga "Les batailles de la vie" qu'il rencontra le succès. Le maître de forges et La grande Marnière sont parmi les plus connus et furent tirés à très grand nombre. Ont dit de lui qu'il fut en quelque sorte un Anti-Zola par la forme et les thématiques. Ohnet fut l'historiographe de la bourgeoisie française et de l'aristocratie quand Zola décrivait les mineurs de fond et les filles de rien. Les critiques lui ont reproché des longueurs dans les descriptions qu'il fait (on pourrait dire la même chose de Zola) et quelques platitudes. Jules Lemaître s'exprime ainsi à son sujet : "Les quelques qualités de ces romans, étant purement scéniques, échappent à la lecture. On y trouve, en revanche, l'élégance des chromolithographies, la noblesse des sujets de pendule, les effets de cuisse des cabotins, l'optimisme des nigauds, le sentimentalisme des romances, la distinction comme la conçoivent les filles de concierge, la haute vie comme la rêve Emma Bovary, le beau style comme le comprend M. Homais. C'est du Feuillet sans grâce ni délicatesse, du Cherbuliez sans esprit ni philosophie, du Theuriet sans poésie ni franchise : de la triple essence de banalité." (Les Contemporains. Études et portraits littéraires, première série, Paris, librairie H. Lecène et H. Oudin, 1886, p. 354.). On sait ce qu'il reste de l'oeuvre de Jules Lemaître ... Le Maître de Forges a été adapté au cinéma par Fernand Rivers et Abel Gance en 1933, avec Gaby Morlay dans le rôle principal. Un premier film muet était sorti dès 1912. Bel exemplaire très bien établi par Dupré.

The original issue in wraps - not from the hardbound aggregations - of the August1880 issue which contains Ellen E. Dickinson's article "The Book of Mormon" "manuscript found" dealing with the claim of the daughter of Reverend Solomon Spaulding that her father had in fact written a work based on his actual experiences it is claimed at mounds he excavated near Conneaut Ohio in 1812 which was subsequently usurped by Joseph Smith for the creation of the Book of Mormon. Fascinating reading and the writing has a ring of authenticity to it un-hyped and oddly down-to-earth direct and sincere and simple for the language of the day - though I am certainly no expert on the subject. Other topics in this issue of the always thoroughly illustrated Scribner's Monthly - almost all thoroughly illustrated with engravings - are: About England with Charles Dickens Fra Girolamo Savonarola The French Republic Canada Whippoorwills the Grandissimes Peter the Great Curiosities of Advertising American Diplomacy Rivers superb engravings and the etchings of Seymour Haden. Il est un guide parfait, aussi bien dans les Musées que dans les rues, les marchés, les cabarets, théâtres, les bas quartiers de Rotterdam, chez les prostituées et les matelots, sur les dunes de Scheveningue, dans le quartier de Rapembourg où les Elzeviers eurent leur imprimerie, chez le petit peuple de Haarlem, chez les diamantaires, sur les canaux... Les catalogues des Musées occupent les pages 255 à 379.DU CAMP (Maxime)Poulet-Malassis n’a publié qu’un seul livre du très contesté Maxime Du Camp. « On l’a chargé de tous les péchés ; sans doute en avait-il commis beaucoup » dit Cl. Pichois in Lettres à Baudelaire p. 140. Fils d’un médecin aisé, Du Camp naquit à Paris en 1822 et mourut à Bade en 1894. Il eut très tôt le goût des voyages. A 22 ans, il alla visiter la Turquie, la Grèce et l’Algérie d’où il rapporta Souvenirs et paysages d’Orient (1848). Un second voyage effectué avec Flaubert mit en valeur ses talents de photographe (Egypte, Nubie, Palestine et Syrie, 1852). A la suite d’une randonnée en Bretagne, toujours avec Flaubert, il écrivit les chapitres de Par les champs et les grèves. Du Camp connut le succès avec des ouvrages à vocation industrielle et sociale. Il est aussi l’auteur de Forces perdues (1867) un roman paru en deux ans avant l’Education sentimentale et qui dépeint la désillusion d’une génération. Avec les Chants modernes (1855) dont la préface est un manifeste, il avait demandé aux poètes de refuser « l’art pour l’art » au profit d’un art didactique (inspiré par le saint simonisme) qui célèbrerait le Progrès, la machine à vapeur ou la locomotive.Du Camp est surtout connu aujourd’hui pour ses Souvenirs littéraires qui constituent un document sur Flaubert et le monde littéraire de son temps. Il fut aussi un des cinq fondateurs de la Revue de Paris à laquelle collabora Baudelaire qu’il avait connu chez Madame Sabatier. En 1885 Du Camp fut désigné, au nom de l’Académie, pour prononcer un discours officiel aux funérailles de V. Hugo. Il dut y renoncer car les journaux intransigeants excitèrent la population parisienne à siffler l’auteur des Convulsions de Paris. L’écrivain valait sans doute mieux que l’homme qui fut accusé d’ « arrivisme », d’hypocrisie, de déloyauté.

This is the first full and complete biography of Abraham Lincoln.<br /> <br /> PROVENANCE<br /> <br /> Lyman Gibson Bennett 1832 -1904 was an American teacher surveyor and civil engineer from Schuyler County New York who served the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1861 Bennett enlisted as a Corporal in Co. E of the 36th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment a three-year unit known as the Fox River Regiment. Military authorities took advantage of his skills assigning him to engineering duties at Rolla and St. Louis Missouri throughout late 1861 and early 1862. His detached duty which included map-making and work on fortifications ended in time for Bennett to join his regiment for the Battle of Pea Ridge Arkansas on March 7 1862. He was permanently detached from the 36th Illinois after the battle to serve on the engineering staff of Brigadier General Samuel Ryan Curtis. He sketched the Pea Ridge battlefield and was the cartographer of the Army of the Southwest as it marched across Missouri to Helena Arkansas. In 1863 Bennett took a commission as major of the 4th Arkansas Volunteer Cavalry Regiment United States which he helped raise and organize. He resigned and was honorably discharged in August 1864. As a civilian Bennett again joined the engineering department of General Samuel Curtis then commanding the Department of Kansas. He mapped the 1864 battlefields of Price's Raid and was sent to inspect the army's installations along the stage line to Denver Colorado. Wagner 2009 was written almost entirely from the journal that Bennett kept in 1865. <br /> <br /> CONDITION REPORT<br /> <br /> The book is in Good condition - binding is firm with hinges only slightly weakening. Rear hinge starting to crack. Colorful boards. Heavy rubbing along extremities with some cloth loss to crown and heel of spine. Some fraying to cloth covering the spine and joints. Foxing throughout - light except the first and last quartile of the book and near and on the plates where it is quite heavy. Some pages with heavy foxing in the gutters. One closed page tear.
