Sir Henry Holland 1st Baronet 27 October 1788 27 October 1873 was a British physician and travel writer. Born in Knutsford Cheshire Holland was the son of the physician Peter Holland 1766-1853 and his wife Mary Willets through whom he was a cousin of the novelist Elizabeth Gaskell and nephew of the potter Josiah Wedgwood. In 1822 he married Margaret Emma Caldwell 1795-1830 known as Emma with whom he had two sons and two daughters. Emma died in 2 February 1830. He later became son-in-law to the wit Sydney Smith whose daughter Saba he married as his second wife with whom he had two daughters. Holland gained fame through his travel writings having travelled to Iceland and through the Balkans and the Iberian peninsula while the British were at war with France. He was also a talented society physician and between his good looks his charm and his experiences and conversation he was much in demand. Holland died on his 85th birthday the 27th October 1873 at his house in Brook Street London. Leather bound with cloth covered boards. Both front and rear covers are detached. The binding of the text block is tight despite the absence of extremities. The spine is detached and missing. There is some wear to the detached boards including chips to the leather and marks to the cloth boards. Internally it is generally clean and bright apart from some brown spotting to the front and rear blank-end papers and title page. There is an ownership sticker on the front pastedown. A complete two-volume memoir of the popular writer and Anglican cleric Sydney Smith written by his daughter. With a selection from his letters to volume 2. Alongside his parochial work Smith also founded the cultural and intellectual periodical Edinburgh Review. Among his contemporaries Smith had a reputation as a humourist but also published several sermons and religious works throughout his career. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown of both volumes. From the Library of Sir Robert Shafto Adair. Adair was a British Liberal party politician who served as MP for Cambridge for eight years in the mid-nineteenth century. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper of volume 1. The inscription reads 'To Pater From Eric. April 1951'. Prior owner's ink inscription to the title page of volume 2 'S. A. London. Oct. 27. 1857'. In a quarter leather binding over patterned paper boards. The spine to the first volume is lighter than the second. Rubbed to the boards with some light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Rubbed to the spine with some light bumping to the head of volume 2. The hinge are starting but firm to volume 1 and the front hinge is starting to volume 2. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are bright with some light foxing.
