The boards of both volumes show little evidence of wear and remain strong and sturdy. Internally there is some slight damp marking to the preliminary pages of Volume 1 only. 1958A51136No Place: Ralph M. Holland. Very Good. 1958. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Stapled wraps. This is a small booklet approx. 5.5" x 4" with cardstock covers and a stapled spine. The booklet is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The spine ends and corners of the booklet covers have some beginning bumping and there is a light crease to the top front corner. The text pages are clean and bright. "August 29 1899 January 26 1962 Ralph Merridette Holland an Ohio fan joined the N3F in 1950 and was president from 1958 until his death. He edited the clubzine The National Fantasy Fan and received the club's Kaymar Award. The N3F's Ralph M. Holland Award was named after him. He attended Worldcons. He wrote a book featuring a fantasy character called Ghu. As Rolf Telano he wrote A Spacewoman Speaks 1960. He adopted the alter ego of Rolf Telano because he was interested in paranormal phenomena and knew his interest in SF would cast doubt on anything he presented as fact in the paranormal field. Holland was born in Youngstown OH and lived there until his family moved to Akron in 1914. He received an engineering degree worked "in the plant" at the Akron Beacon Journal and later worked for B. G. Goodrich. He spent the last 40 years of his life in Cuyahoga Falls and had been employed by Vaughn Machinery Company there. Inscribed "Mr. O. E. Jennings with Christmas Greetings from the author Dec. 24/13. W. J. Holland." Holland was the director of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and one of the primary forces in obtaining dinosaur skeletons for the museum. In fact this volume contains detailed accounts and illustrations of Holland's efforts to secure a complete diplodocus skeleton in Argentina for the museum promptly named "Dippy" when it was finally assembled. O. E. Jennings 1877-1964 moved to Pittsburgh in 1904 gaining employment at the Carnegie Museum as Custodian of Botany. Jennings remained in this city working as Curator of Botany from 1915 and became Director of the museum in 1946. He is the co-author of the famous "Wildflowers of Western Pennsylvania" 1953. In a separate included unpaginated booklet Holland has written a description of Lynn Bogue Hunt and descriptions of each of the 12 game birds depicted in the accompanying portfolio. The booklet also is annotated to identify various of the birds in the paintings. Also in the booklet are blurbs from various enthusiasts not least of whom is Ernest Hemingway: "Lynn Bogue Hunt is the finest painter of game birds that we have in Ameica and all sportsmen will want to have this new portfolio of his paintings.
