In overall fine condition (some spots in margin; miniature triangular stamp just touching image area). - - Battleships "Waterloo" and "Wassenaer" left Holland in January 1827, having on board a total of 3,000 troops of the Dutch Expedition Force to the East Indies. Though the giant anchor managed to save the "Waterloo" en-route, fighting a severe storm, the death toll among the Force's soldiers during their service in the East Indies was horrible: only 300 returned home. Later, the anchor was brought to the Netherlands as a gift to the King. In 1880, the artists father and son van Looy made a stone lithograph of it. It was printed by the famous stone-lithographers firm of S. Lankhout & Co., of The Hague, and published in 1881 by Publisher Gouda Quint, of Arnhem.
