"The Essays collected in this volume were written in great part during journeys or voyages which I have been accustomed to make in the autumn of every year. The greater number of the Essays thus composed will be seen to have relation to the progress and actual state of the physical sciences. Written with the view to such illustration they will I trust be read under the same view; --that is not as formal treatises on these several subjects but as general outlines denoting the new methods and spirit of modern research; the more recent and remarkable discoveries in each science; and these mutual connections of all the knowledge of which is among the highest attainments of man in his study of the natural world around him" -- Preface

Essays include The progress and spirit of physical science -- Life and organisation -- Human longevity -- Roman history : Julius Caesar -- Physical geography of the sea : Atlantic Ocean -- The Mediterranean Sea -- Meteors and aerolites -- Humboldt's cosmos : sidereal astronomy -- Australia : coral reefs -- Life of Dalton : atomic theory -- Modern chemistry -- Natural history of man. Some of the essays Meteors and aereolites for instance have updates since they were originally published.

A second edition was published in the same year revised with a slightly different page count xiii 504 pages and a publisher's catalogue in rear. 194624872London: Peter Davies. Very Good in Good dj. 1946. First British Edition. Hardcover. light shelfwear a touch of soiling to covers slight bump to bottom right corner of front cover; jacket torn at top of spine with some paper loss various other small tears and nicks. The scarce British issue of the novel which served as the basis for one of the best of Otto Preminger's early films and a worthy follow-up to his classic LAURA. The first of five novels by this author who apparently also dabbled in screenwriting without any notable success. The only other film credit I've been able to uncover for her was a story credit for the 1950 noir THE FILE ON THELMA JORDON. The movie version starred Dana Andrews supported by Linda Darnell sexy girl and Alice Faye nice girl the latter making a sort of "comeback" as well as a change of pace in a non-musical role after being absent from the screen for nearly two years. Ironically however it ended up being Faye's swan song as a major star after she got into a dispute with studio head Darryl Zanuck over his decision to cut down her role in the picture in favor of Darnell's. Great creepy jacket art -- wish I knew who "K" was. NOTE that there is a small circular stamp on the ffep that reads "Colonial Edition." . Peter Davies hardcover books
194514897New York: E.P. Dutton & Company Inc. Very Good in Very Good dj. 1945. First Edition. Hardcover. lightly worn copy with some faint staining to the front cover short closed tear at bottom of title page; jacket edgeworn a few small tears some minor paper loss at both ends of spine all text on spine still present internally tape-repaired with modern tape at least at front foldover. Very scarce novel which served as the basis for one of the best of Otto Preminger's early films and a worthy follow-up to his classic LAURA. The first of five novels by this author who apparently also dabbled in screenwriting without any notable success. The only other film credit I've been able to uncover for her was a story credit for the 1950 noir THE FILE ON THELMA JORDON. Interestingly the front jacket flap bears a boxed notice to "WATCH FOR THE MOVIE" indicating that the book was "snapped up hot off the typewriter by Twentieth Century-Fox." Dana Andrews was already announced as the star of the forthcoming film version in late September 1944 about seven months before the book hit the shelves with the finished film finally going into release in December. Andrews' co-stars were Linda Darnell sexy girl and Alice Faye nice girl the latter making a sort of "comeback" as well as a change of pace in a non-musical role after being absent from the screen for nearly two years. Ironically however it ended up being Faye's swan song as a major star after she got into a dispute with studio head Darryl Zanuck over his decision to cut down her role in the picture in favor of Darnell's. .
