Samuel Ireland was an author and engraver who issued many titles under his 'Picturesque Views' series. The first was his tour through Holland Barbant and France. He also wrote many more 'river' views on the Thames the Medway and the Wye. This work describes the locations and views along the River Avon from its source at Naseby to its junction with the Severn at Twekesbury. A bright copy of this work with good margins. In a full calf binding. Externally very smart with rubbing to the joints and extremities. Small loss to the leather at the head of front joint. Internally firmly bound. Two plates mis-inserted plate p243 at p250 and plate p250 at p253 All plates.present. ----------- A bit of trivia about the author. ---------- Samuel Ireland was a fervent admirer of William Shakespeare and in 1793 when preparing his "Picturesque Views of the Avon" he took his son with him to Stratford-upon-Avon to examine carefully all the sights associated with the dramatist. The father recorded many local traditions which he accepted as true including those concocted for his benefit according to Sidney Lee by John Jordan a Stratford poet who was his chief guide throughout his visit. ------------ In his pursuit of information about Shakespeare Ireland learned from some of the oldest inhabitants that manuscripts had been moved from Shakespeare's residence at New Place to Clopton House at the time of the Stratford fire. To Clopton House he went where he learned from the tenant that the manuscripts he was seeking had been destroyed only a week before. His disappointment was extreme. 'My God! Sir you are not aware of the loss which the world has sustained. Would to heaven I had arrived sooner!' ------Today he is best remembered today as the chief victim of the Ireland Shakespeare forgeries created by his son William Henry Ireland. This original 15 June 1716 document signed by Britains King George I authorizes reimbursement for care given to prisoners in the wake of the Jacobite rising of 1715 which asserted the right of the Stuarts to the throne over the Hanoverians of which King George I was the first. <br /> <br />The document is a single sheet of laid watermarked paper measuring 15.75 x 12.75 inches folded to form four 7.875 x 12.75 inches panels. The first panel features the Kings order prominently signed by him George R at the head of the document. The document is further signed at the foot By His Majestys Command by Wm Pulteney the future 1st Earl of Bath who was then serving as Secretary of War. The document is addressed at the lower left to Henry Earl of Lincoln Pay Master Generall of Our Guards Garrisons & Land Forces in Great Britain and Forces abroad. The document orders the Earl of Lincoln to Pay unto John Mulcaster Agent and Sollicitor for transacting the Affairs of the Rebell Prisons the sum of Six hundred Ninety Two Pounds Three Shillings and Five Pence to be paid over to Lt. Col. Solomon Rapin in satisfaction of the like Summ disbursd by him in Nurses Medicines and other necessary Contingencys for the use of the Rebell Prisoners at the several Places they are kept from the 14th of Nov. 1715 to the 30th of Aprill 1716. The inconclusive Battle of Sheriffmuir had taken place on 13 November 1715. The document was executed at Our Court at St. Jamess this 15. Day of June 1716. In the Second Year of Our Reign. <br /> <br />The document bears three horizontal folds ostensibly where it was folded and sealed for original transmittal to Henry Earl of Lincoln. On the second panel is written the name John Mulcaster. The first and second sections of the upper fourth panel were obviously from the soiling and writing thereon the outer folded portions of the document when it was transmitted. Horizontally on the second section of the upper fourth panel is written: Warrant for. 692.3.5. to Mr. John Mulcaster in satisfaction of the like Summ Disbursd by Lt. Col. Sol. Rapin in Nurses Medicines sec. for the Rebell Prisoners from 14th. Nov. 1715. To 30th. Aprill 1716. all above the date June 16th. 1716. <br /> <br />Condition is very good overall. The document is all but complete with only fractional loss to the lower right corner two tiny holes at the intersection of vertical and horizontal folds and a short closed tear and minor associated loss at the upper right corner of the rear panel. The document shows light overall soiling and spotting the soiling heavy only on the upper rear panel which served as the outer faces when the document was originally folded for transmittal. <br /> <br />The future King George I was born Georg Ludwig in Hanover perhaps not an obvious route to the British throne. However the death in July 1700 of the duke of Gloucester reopened the question of the English succession That successor had to be a Protestantno Roman Catholic would have been consideredand of Stuart descent a combination which automatically excluded over fifty claimants with a closer hereditary claim. The person who united these qualifications was Georgs mother Sophia 1630-1714 youngest daughter of Frederick V of the Palatinate Winter King of Bohemia and of Elizabeth daughter of James I of England. <br /> <br />When he signed this document King George I 16601727 had only recently assumed the throne of Great Britain and Ireland ten months earlier in August 1715. The Jacobite cause pressed unsuccessfully upon his enthronement would be pressed with rebellious force of arms again in 1745 also to no avail. The Hanoverian period was remarkably stable not least because of the longevity of its monarchs. From 1714 through to 1901 there were only six monarchs one of whom George III remains the longest reigning king in British History. Queen Victoria then surpassed her grandfather in both age and length of reign. He was an avid art and manuscript collector and many of the works that he engraved and published were after pieces found in his own collection. This romantic view is after a painting by DeVlieger which was in Ireland's collection at the time. This image operates as both an example of the picturesque tradition in eighteenth century landscape prints and as an advertisement and promotion of Ireland's celebrated collection. With this image Ireland presents himself as both a serious engraver and a respected collector. Unfortunately today Ireland is better remembered for his involvement in the Shakespeare forgeries than for his evocative prints. Over a period of many years Ireland's son William Henry sold his father a series of forged manuscripts which he claimed to be written in Shakespeare's hand. Ireland who willingly trusted his son added these forgeries to his collection and presented them in an exhibition to the literary community who accepted them as genuine. The charade progressed so far that an invented play entitled 'Vortigern' which William Henry had written and presented as a missing work by Shakespeare was performed at Sheridan's Drury Lane theatre by some of the leading actors of the age. When the hoax was eventually discovered Ireland's reputation was ruined and his son was disgraced. This print is from the famed Oettingen-Wallerstein collection which was compiled over two centuries by various members of the royal household. Old stamps of a defunct mercantile library occasional dust soiling and mild spotting the folding map and plan have some careful and professional tissue repairs at some edges and folds not extensive; generally a good sound copy. First edition. In 1744 Smith published the full version of his THE ANTIENT AND PRESENT STATE OF THE COUNTY OF DOWN which the DNB describes as "the first Irish county history on a large scale ever written." In the same year he was instrumental in founding the Physico-Historical Society at Dublin the purpose of which was to support the research toward and publication of a series of county histories. In addition to this work and its predecessor an important history of Cork appeared under the Society's auspices and a history of Kerry followed though the Society had by then broken up. All "form a valuable contribution to Irish topography of which Smith may be regarded as the pioneer" - DNB. Bradshaw had the second edition of 1774 but not the first edition. Small signs of age and wear to the binding including slight crackling and nicks to the spine folding map with faint dampstain to tail margin two negligible ink spots to blank area on the map of the Irish Sea but A VERY APPEALING COPY quite clean and remarkably fresh internally and in an entirely solid period binding.<br/> <br/> This is the second corrected edition of the first comprehensive road atlas of Ireland offered here in especially attractive condition. In response to increasing demand for accurate maps of the country's road system the Irish House of Commons commissioned George Taylor and Andrew Skinner who together had previously produced the first road atlas of Scotland among other works to undertake a survey of the land. Taylor and Skinner completed their work in 1777 and published the first edition of their findings in 1778. This second edition includes updates to the year 1783 as well as an additional map no. 289. Renowned for their precision and detail Taylor and Skinner's maps clearly show roads crossroads and bridges as well as topographical features such as hills lakes and rivers including the direction of the water flow; landmarks such as castles churches and ruins; and the names of local landlords and their homes. The maps appear either as half-page strips or in full-page and the distances are given in both Irish and English miles 11 Irish miles being equal to 14 British miles. The robust list of subscribers which includes a number of earls viscounts lords bishops and British and Irish army men demonstrates the great need for and widespread success of this important work. Our former owner may well be the famed and controversial naturalist Joseph Sabine 1770-1837 who often signed his name as "Jos. Sabine" as seen here. He certainly had good reason to own maps of Ireland. He was from an Anglo-Irish family himself and was Honorary Secretary of the Horticultural Society a position which at the time carried great clout in the botanical community and one that presupposed knowledge of geography across the realm. DNB tells us that "Sabine played a leading part in the establishment of the society's garden first at Hammersmith and afterwards at Chiswick; in sending out David Douglas and others as collectors; in starting local societies in connection with the Horticultural Society; and in growing and distributing new and improved varieties of flowers fruits and vegetables throughout the country." While not a rare book this is the kind of volume that would have normally encountered frequent and inevitably damaging use so to find a copy as well preserved as this one is a lucky occurrence. Bristol and ESTC record a presumed Philadelphia printing of this same broadside which was found bound in the New York Historical Society's copy of Franklin's Pennsylvania Gazette for 1735-6 -- but ESTC does not record this Dublin printing of 1735. Second edition with additions two quarto volumes 222155 mm xviii 217 1; iv 211 1 pp. Complete with all forty nine aquatints including the engraved titles and the extra plate of 'Delft towards the Hague' not cited in the plate list. Half titles not called for. This is the exceedingly rare hand coloured issue which was unknown to Abbey not even a mention of 'some copies hand coloured'. The distinction between the first and second editions is that plates 31 and 48 appear in this edition for the first time and number 9 'Delft' is also additional and is not called for in the list of plates. this is the plate which appeared in the first edition instead of the plate listed 'Entrance to Delft from Rotterdam'. All eight volumes are uniformly and beautifully bound in full red morocco by Wood of London. Covers with single gilt fillet borders and corner gilt foliate devices spines delicately gilt in compartments in the same foliate pattern gilt spine lettering gilt board edges and turn-ins marbled endpapers top edges gilt. All plates captioned and with their original tissue giards. An absolutely stunning set with all 209 plates being hand coloured without any offsetting or paper flaws and in a sumptuous and appropriate binding.
