With a portrait frontispiece. A work of speculative natural history and philosophy originally published anonymously. It brought together various ideas of stellar evolution with the progressive transmutation of species in an accessible narrative which tied together numerous scientific theories of the age. The work was well received by Victorian society and became an international bestseller. However its unorthodox themes contradicted the natural theological theories of the time and were reviled by clergymen and by scientists. Written by Robert Chambers a Scottish publisher geologist evolutionary thinker author and journal editor who was highly influential in mid-nineteenth-century scientific and political circles. With an introduction by Anthony Ireland. In the original green cloth binding. Externally sound with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Splits in the cloth to the head and tail of the spine resulting in minor loss to the head. Front hinge tender with rear hinge starting but firm. Internally firmly bound with frontispiece detached but present. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot and light age toning to the first and last few pages. Contemporary inscription to the title page with the previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Good W. & R. Chambers hardcover

Vuole essere un timido e goffo racconto e resoconto di un viaggio dove mi sono sentito un poeta, un musicista, uno scrittore, una specie di viaggiatore trasportato da una forza incantatrice, alla continua ricerca di sorprese. Le cronache che seguono scaturiscono da storie vere vissute da me e dai miei amici nel corso della nostra vacanza irlandese, attraverso la curiosità, la scoperta della gente, dei luoghi, della musica di strada, delle donne irlandesi (molto belle e affascinanti), della scoperta dei posti (visti finora solo in foto), della musica e la presa d'atto, con enorme sorpresa, che non lontano da casa, c'è una meraviglia che non avevo mai immaginato prima. Ogni giorno vissuto in terra d'Irlanda era un perdersi in emozioni dettate dai colori e dai luoghi incantevoli. Quello che rimane centrale è comunque la gente, "The Irish", quelli che incontri per la strada e che sono sempre gentili e sorridenti.
