I did not see an earlier printing for the book so likely a first edition. The front hinge has a two cm tear at the base and the rear hinge has a two cm tear middle of the hinge. The book has 586 pages with Ulm and Umbria being the last two words in the index so a page of the index may be missing. Full calf later spine with five raised bands compartments tooled in gilt with repeated floral tools red morocco label lettered in gilt; endpapers renewed. Some foxing and browning to the first and last leaves; a couple of preliminary blanks with water-staining not affecting text or images; otherwise clean internally and well preserved. Very good. A poetic work presented as deriving from a French manuscript connected with Pierre de Boscosel de Chastelard the French courtier executed in 1563 following his attachment to Mary Queen of Scots. This literary forgery belongs to the later career of William Henry Ireland 1775-1835 notorious for his Shakespeare forgeries of the 1790s. As noted in institutional cataloguing the work may be regarded as a quasi-forgery. Ireland's claim this time being that he was simply translator of a Gallic manuscript found in a College in Paris. Essentially though he was bang at it again. A sound and attractive copy of Chatelar by one of the most notorious literary forgers of the period. . Very Good. Some foxing and chips along extremities none approaching text else Very Good. Circulating handbill for members of the Country Book Club issued to accompany the shared copy of "A Subaltern's Furlough: Descriptive of Scenes in the United States Upper and Lower Canada New Brunswick and Nova Scotia" by Edward Thomas Coke published in two volumes in 1832 and 1833. Listed are nineteen members of the Club both men and women who were allotted ten days with the book before being required to pass it along to the next member lest they receive a "Fine for keeping a Book beyond the Time Two-Pence per Day. Sixpence for omitting to date. No Member is allowed to lend a Book belonging to this Society under a Penalty of One-fourth of its original cost." Below the rules the handbill is separated into three columns listing in print the names of the nineteen members save the last "Mr. Hodgson Cadogan" which is in manuscript together with columns for date "received" and "sent away" which are accomplished in manuscript in each member's hand showing that the book in question was enjoyed by all but one reader between February 20 and September 22 1838. It should be noted that five members kept the book beyond their ten days Mr. John Cookson being the most egregious offender holding onto "A Subaltern's Furlough" from July 7th until August 1st.
