ORIGINELE RODE LINNEN BANDEN UIT DE TIJD. met goudopdruk, drie delen, 16x24.5 cm., 309+262+300pp. illustraties en uitvouwbare platen in z/w.(foto website wijk! af) Dicht bebouwd district ten oosten van Antwerpen, ten noorden van Berchem en ten zuidoosten van Deurne met een oppervlakte van 391 ha en 41.190 inwoners (1991); in 1214 reeds vermeld als "Borgerholt", naam die vermoedelijk verwijst naar de bosrijke begroeiing. Vanaf de tweede helft van de 15de eeuw een groeiende, bewoonde agglomeratie die op wereldlijk en op geestelijk gebied een eenheid vormde met Deurne. Tot de eeuwwisseling was Borgerhout een landelijk gehucht, vooral sinds eind 15de eeuw onder invloed van Antwerpen, met een stadsbedienende landbouwbevolking. Het was gekend om zijn handelaars, voornamelijk herbergiers en "beenhouwers" (zogenaamd "Borgerhout in de beenhouwers" of "in de beenhouwers te Sint Willibrords tot Borgerhout"). De concurrentie van de bloeiende brouwerij-industrie en in mindere mate van de vleeshouwerij leidde in de 16de eeuw tot wrijvingen met de stad Antwerpen die de inkomsten uit bieraccijnzen wou vrijwaren. De tegenstellingen tussen het louter op landbouw gerichte Deurne en het demografisch sterkere Borgerhout met verscheidene industriele bedrijven mondden in 1836 uit in de politieke zelfstandigheid van de gemeente Borgerhout, in 1837 gevolgd door de oprichting van een afzonderlijke parochie. Borgerhout werd tijdens het Ancien Regime verscheidene malen geplunderd en/of verwoest: in 1542 door de benden van Maarten van Rossem; in 1579 en volgende jaren tijdens de gevechten om Antwerpen. In 1830 werd te Borgerhout gevochten tussen Hollandse troepen en Belgische vrijwilligers
