Bellissima e geniale, anima della vita culturale mitteleuropea nel delicato passaggio fra diciannovesimo e ventesimo secolo, portavoce internazionale delle avanguardie artistiche, Alma Mahler - Alma Schindler, poi Mahler, poi Gropius, infine Werfel - raccolse all'alba degli anni cinquanta i suoi ricordi del marito Gustav, dai primi diffidenti incontri nel 1901 all'ultimo viaggio insieme, di rientro dagli Stati Uniti, che il 18 maggio 1911 si sarebbe concluso con la morte del compositore. Dieci anni insieme, anni tribolati, anni fecondi: sullo sfondo di un'epoca di inquieto fervore, della quale i due sono fra i protagonisti principali, Mahler compone sei sinfonie, i "Rückertlieder" e i "Kindertotenlieder", e "Das Lied von der Erde", mentre Alma riunisce intorno a sé i musicisti, i pittori, gli uomini di lettere più significativi del periodo. Alma racconta, ma Alma è anche maestra di spostamenti e di censure: vede le cose a modo suo, e lascia fuori dalla narrazione tutto quello che non conviene al suo mito personale di donna straordinaria, unica "la più bella ragazza di Vienna", che solo per stare accanto a Mahler rinunciò a una carriera come compositrice di sicuro successo. Nelle lettere che costituiscono la seconda parte di questo volume, in gran parte indirizzate da Gustav alla moglie, Alma è amatissima, e riceve gli interminabili baci del marito insieme alle sue riflessioni sulla musica, sui compositori contemporanei...
