Nicolas Sanson 20 December 1600 7 July 1667 was a French cartographer termed by some the creator of French geography in which he's been called the "father of French cartography." The French school of Geography was unprecedented in its attention to precision and scientific detail and discarded much of the decorative embellishments of previous maps as irrelevant. From Sanson's time in the second half of the seventeenth century until the latter part of the eighteenth century French geographical conceptions were more influential than those put forward by any other nation. He was tutor to Louis XIII and Louis XIV. Sanson published over 300 maps. In 1692 Hubert Jaillot collected Sanson's maps in an Atlas nouveau. Wikipedia unknown

16291276Christopher Prince of Portugal's biographical portrait of his father Antonio Prior de Crato 1531-1595 illegitimate son of Prince Louis Duke of Beja and claimant to the Portuguese throne. Antonio - who glories in such names as 'The Determined' 'The Fighter' 'The Independentist' and 'The Resistant' - was proclaimed King of Portugal on 19th July 1580 but was defeated on 25th August at the Battle of Ancântara by the armies of rival claimant Philip II of Spain led by Fernando Ãlvarez de Toldedo Duke of Alba. After his defeat Antonio fled to the Azores where he minted coin organised resistance to Philip's rule and established an opposition government that lasted until 1783.
As a Knight of Malta Antonio never married but is thought to have fathered ten illegitimate children. One of these Christopher author of the present work was born in Tangier in April 1573. Always an ardent champion of his father's claims he continued to fight his father's cause long after his death in 1595. This biography of his father contains several interesting documents relating to Dom Antonio's applications for foreign help in fighting Philip II and regaining the throne most notably to the court of Elizabeth I. This work is very much part of a political campaign: it contains a lengthy dedication to the young Louis XIII of France discussing the role of his parents in Antonio's struggle and an Avertissement au lecteur in which Christopher makes a plea for French involvement pointing out that the royal line of Portugal is in direct descent from the French royal family.

8vo 170 x 110mm pp. xvi 302 2 engraved arms of the King of Portugal to title woodcut initial and headpiece slight yellowing upper edge a bit dusty in contemporary vellum spine painted in black with six compartments marked by gilt tooling where the raised bands would be five of the compartments with central gilt monogram DG within decorative gilt cornerpieces the sixth compartment with orange morocco label lettered in gilt blind filet along sides of spine gilt edges with the later bookplate of Annibal Fernandes Thomaz and an early manuscript number possibly shelfmark on the rear pastedown.

OCLC lists BL Harvard Johns Hopkins Catholic University of America and Kansas.
Gervais Alliot

Set in roman for the main text and italic type. 15 1 blank pp. First and only edition of a rare pamphlet defending Portugal against the claims of the Dutch Government and the West India Company WIC in Brazil: one of the earliest and one of the three "most remarkable works" published by Portugal's supporters in the Netherlands Asher p. 194. In an effort to take back Brazil from the Dutch the Portuguese had supported a local revolt in 1645 and the hostilities on land and sea between the Portuguese and the WIC had escalated rapidly. Portugal was suing for peace and the present pamphlet presents their side. In a series of questions and answers it sets forth the Dutch reservations about the peace and distrust of Portugal and attempts point by point to refute all arguments against a settlement. The author and printer of the pamphlet have not been identified but the author himself refers to his own Vertooch aen de . 1671WRCAM34482Madrid 1671. 16 leaves. Folio. Dbd. Upper outer corners numbered in contemporary manuscript. Minute toning at fore-edge primarily on first leaf. Overall very good. In a half morocco and cloth box. The petition of Don Pedro Nuño Colon de Portugal descendant of the explorer Christopher Columbus and sixth Duke of Veragua and Marquis of Jamaica requesting that Mariana of Austria Queen Regent of Charles II of Spain make some compensation for the loss of income the Duke had suffered since the British took Jamaica in 1655. Jamaica had been the exclusive fief of the descendants of Columbus since 1536 when it was given as a reward to the family. This document is dated 1671 by the text at the top of the second leaf where the Duke refers to Spain's cession of Jamaica to Great Britain "last year in 1670." Despite this date some scholars assert a date of 1672. Since most of the text is devoted to the life of Columbus the document is by default also one of the few early biographies of the explorer.

In his argument the Duke puts special emphasis on the tremendous gain Spain received by virtue of his ancestor's discovery. In citing various sources he estimates that within the first 170 years after its discovery the New World had produced for Spain some one billion 190 million pesos. Despite these figures the present heir to Columbus' titles and estates was reduced to an income of sixteen thousand ducats.

The Duke mentions no specific amount of compensation that he would like for Jamaica but points out that Puerto Rico is of approximately the same worth. The last four pages are a glowing description of Jamaica its towns people products etc. ending with an itemized accounting of just how much rent the island had produced annually for the Duke before the British occupation 40950 pesos silver. Two years after this petition was printed the Duke was made the 26th viceroy of New Spain - a fair reward for the loss of Jamaica. His term however was short. He reigned only six days before dying in Mexico City.

"This is the final petition sent to the throne of Spain and contains a long account of the various descendants of Columbus and their claims on Spain an account of Jamaica and a list of the various dues received from Jamaica" - Maggs. The previously mentioned biographical content of the present document is important. It is possibly an assimilation of the sixteen-page folio manuscript of the life of Columbus written by Juan de Solorzano Pereira the famous Spanish jurist and fiscal of the Council of the Indies in 1628 responsible for the great work on colonial American law the POLITICA INDIANA published in 1629. In that manuscript Solorzano states that it was composed at the request of the Duke's branch of the Columbus family forty- two years before the present document was printed. The Solorzano manuscript is described in the LeClerc catalogue of 1878 item 137 along with other documents relating to the Duke's branch of the family.

One of the earliest Columbus biographies married to an eloquent plea by his impoverished heirs. Extremely rare. Palau locates only one copy of the original at the Real Academia de la Historia. EUROPEAN AMERICANA locates two more Huntington and British Library. The petition was reprinted by the Mill Press in San Francisco in 1992. PALAU 57250. BIBLIOGRAPHIA COLOMBINA p.190. ENC. UNIV. ILL. Vol. 14 p.248 Colon de Portugal; Vol. 57 p.198 Solorzano Pereira.
