Interior bastante limpo denotando-se uma mancha escurecida no primeiro volume que afecta a lombada exterior durante setenta fólios e esparsos sublinhados antigos. O autor nasceu em Penamacor na primeira metade do século XVII e faleceu em 1677. Depois de se formar em Latim e Humanidades estudou na Universidade de Salamanca onde cursou Direito Cesareio sendo discÃpulo de Francisco de Amaya voltando a Portugal exerceu diversos cargos de jurisprudência. Estudioso do direito civil é reconhecido como um destacado tratadista sendo este "Tractatus de donationibus." a sua obra mais importante ao reconhecer um conjunto de doutrinas de direito público do seu tempo e por constituir uma sÃntese da historiografia jurÃdica dos séculos XVI e XVII. Seguindo como fio condutor as doações reais reflete a preocupação dos pensadores do seu tempo em torno da relação entre o PrÃncipe e o Estado posicionando-se a favor dos reis de Portugal. Neste sentido defende o monopólio português sobre o Oceano Ãndico em oposição à s teses de Grocio sobre a liberdade do mar. Este "Tractatus." foi impresso pela primeira vez em Lisboa por Juan da Costa em 1673/1675 sendo esta a primeira edição impressa em Lião a cargo da Sociedade constituida por Posuel e os irmãos Anisson pertencentes a uma das famÃlias de impressores mais relevantes de França dos séculos XVII e XVIII. A most attractive copy. <br /> <br /> A celebrated account of suffering under the Portuguese Inquisition. Dellon a French medical doctor and naturalist settled at Daman on the western coast of India around 1673 where he began a private medical practice. Within a year he was taken prisoner by the Inquisition accused among other crimes of blaspheming against the adoration of the crucifix. He was transported to Goa where he was held for two years under harsh conditions before being shipped to Lisbon where he was finally released in 1675. This account of Dellon's sufferings first appeared in Leiden 1687; in Paris a year later then rapidly went into English German and Dutch translations. In a half morocco and cloth box. The petition of Don Pedro Nuño Colon de Portugal descendant of the explorer Christopher Columbus and sixth Duke of Veragua and Marquis of Jamaica requesting that Mariana of Austria Queen Regent of Charles II of Spain make some compensation for the loss of income the Duke had suffered since the British took Jamaica in 1655. Jamaica had been the exclusive fief of the descendants of Columbus since 1536 when it was given as a reward to the family. This document is dated 1671 by the text at the top of the second leaf where the Duke refers to Spain's cession of Jamaica to Great Britain "last year in 1670." Despite this date some scholars assert a date of 1672. Since most of the text is devoted to the life of Columbus the document is by default also one of the few early biographies of the explorer. <br> <br> In his argument the Duke puts special emphasis on the tremendous gain Spain received by virtue of his ancestor's discovery. In citing various sources he estimates that within the first 170 years after its discovery the New World had produced for Spain some one billion 190 million pesos. Despite these figures the present heir to Columbus' titles and estates was reduced to an income of sixteen thousand ducats. <br> <br> The Duke mentions no specific amount of compensation that he would like for Jamaica but points out that Puerto Rico is of approximately the same worth. The last four pages are a glowing description of Jamaica its towns people products etc. ending with an itemized accounting of just how much rent the island had produced annually for the Duke before the British occupation 40950 pesos silver. Two years after this petition was printed the Duke was made the 26th viceroy of New Spain - a fair reward for the loss of Jamaica. His term however was short. He reigned only six days before dying in Mexico City. <br> <br> "This is the final petition sent to the throne of Spain and contains a long account of the various descendants of Columbus and their claims on Spain an account of Jamaica and a list of the various dues received from Jamaica" - Maggs. The previously mentioned biographical content of the present document is important. It is possibly an assimilation of the sixteen-page folio manuscript of the life of Columbus written by Juan de Solorzano Pereira the famous Spanish jurist and fiscal of the Council of the Indies in 1628 responsible for the great work on colonial American law the POLITICA INDIANA published in 1629. In that manuscript Solorzano states that it was composed at the request of the Duke's branch of the Columbus family forty- two years before the present document was printed. The Solorzano manuscript is described in the LeClerc catalogue of 1878 item 137 along with other documents relating to the Duke's branch of the family. <br> <br> One of the earliest Columbus biographies married to an eloquent plea by his impoverished heirs. Extremely rare. Palau locates only one copy of the original at the Real Academia de la Historia. EUROPEAN AMERICANA locates two more Huntington and British Library. Border with longitudinal and latitudinal information. A richly detailed and very interesting map showing the Kingdom of Portugal and the Algarves. Relief shown pictorially with rivers mountains and major and minor settlements depicted through keys. The kingdoms of the Algarves and Portugal are delineated - as are other internal political sub-divisions. The major urban centres are highlighted with red colouring. In the lower part of the map a decorative title cartouche is accompanied by two elaborately dressed scholars performing navigational exercises with their sextant and cross-staff: their gazes directed to the armillary sphere. Another cartouche encases a dual scale. Off the coast 4 naval vessels are pictured illustrating the rich maritime history and naval power of Portugal. Amid the ships a trident-wielding Neptune is depicted astride a Renaissance-style dolphin. The coat-of arms of the Kingdom of Portugal and the Algarves are pictured in the map's top right and left corners respectively. Two ornamental orientation keys can also be seen just off the coast. Fernando Alvares Seco c.1561-85 was a Portuguese mathematician and cartographer who made the first known map of Portugal. It was engraved by Sebastiano del Re and published in Rome in 1561. Abraham Ortelius 1527-98 later reprinted the map in his Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Theater of the world which was first published in May 1570. World Digital Library unknown

Relief on map depicted pictorially and border inlaid with longitudinal and latitudinal details The map is dominated by three rivers: the Tajo Tagus in the south the Douro and the Minho further north. The Spanish kingdom and regions such as Leon are included and the great city of Salamanca can be seen. The lower part of the map runs out before the Tagus estuary empties into the Atlantic at Lisbon. The ornamental title cartouche is in the lower right corner of the map. Off the coast is a large warship flying the coat-of-arms Kingdom of Portugal and the Algarves. The sails of the boat carry Latin text commemorates the commercial and maritime exploits of King John IV in Africa Arabia Ethiopia Persia India and Brazil. Nicolas Sanson 20 December 1600 7 July 1667 was a French cartographer termed by some the creator of French geography in which he's been called the "father of French cartography." The French school of Geography was unprecedented in its attention to precision and scientific detail and discarded much of the decorative embellishments of previous maps as irrelevant. From Sanson's time in the second half of the seventeenth century until the latter part of the eighteenth century French geographical conceptions were more influential than those put forward by any other nation. He was tutor to Louis XIII and Louis XIV. Sanson published over 300 maps. In 1692 Hubert Jaillot collected Sanson's maps in an Atlas nouveau. Wikipedia unknown
