Two Volumes. Foxed. XLib bookplate of York County Historical Society in both volumes. [Withdrawn]. Early manuscript ownership of Eli Lewis (York County, PA) on title page of volume I. 12mo. 200 mm. Original uniform cloth bindings, slightly worn. Spines decorated with a balloon and lettered in gold gilt. Volume I slight loss at head of spine, front board fragile. Volume II loss at head of spine. Hardbound. Good. Clark was a Protestant Episcopal minister born in Pittsfield, MA. He served as Rector in Providence, New York, and Philadelphia. In failing health, he made this trip to England and the Continent. The early owner of this book - Eli Lewis (1750-1807) was a Pennsylvania Quaker who strongly believed in the need to separate the Colonies from England. He traveled back and forth from York Co., PA, to Philadelphia for several years before the war. When it became time for war, Eli was given the rank of Major and lead the 1st Battalion of York Co. Militia. He was a printer and shopkeeper. He started the first newspaper in the area - "The Harrisburg Advertiser." He also was the founder of the town of Lewisberry in York Co., PA. SCARCE. A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR WITH HER SIGNED HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION ON HALF-TITLE. This copy is presented to 'The Dean of Bocking', a title of considerable antiquarian interest. Although Bocking is a village in Essex, the title of Dean is bestowed upon the rector of Hadleigh in Suffolk. It was at Hadleigh Deanery that the Oxford Movement was born in 1833 to change forever the modern Church of England. Presentation copies are very scarce.

The best modern history of the city, first published in 1962. This considerably expanded and updated version was published to coincide with the investiture of HRH the Prince of Wales.
Book is in excellent condition with red paper hardback boards. Binding is solid and square, exterior shows no other blemishes, gilt print to spine, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Dust jacket is price clipped, shows chipping, edgewear, no tears, scuffing. Prnted in G.B. 242 illustrations in gilt and black. Illustrations are photographically reduced from original rubbings and turned into positives with art ehn printed on to a solid gilt base, giving an authentic reproduction of the original design as conceived by the medieval craftsman. Detail to block-making. Book is heavily illustrated with large, often full page illustrations bathed in gilt.
