A rare German map of the early settlements of New South Wales including Sydney Paramatta sic and Bankstown published in 'Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden' Volume 11 in 1803. The two panels of the map show the Endeavour River where Cook beached the 'Endeavour' for repairs after striking the Great Barrier Reef in 1770 and Botany Bay respectively. Plate 55 from Vandermaelen's monumental 'Atlas Universel' showing the New South Wales coast from around Batemans Bay to the Solitary Islands. Sydney the Blue Mountains and hinterland are shown including much of the Lachlan River. Vandermaelen's atlas was 'the first world atlas on a uniform scale. The sixth volume covered "Océanique" and it included seventeen maps of Australia.
