The first three volumes contain extracts from the historical works of Gerald du Barry a Welsh noble and churchman of the twelfth century. He attempted to establish the independence of Wales by restoring the see of St. David's to its ancient primacy. Volume I contains the De Rebus a se gestis an autobiography; Invectionum libelli a reply to calumnies circulated against him; Symbolum electorum which contains his letters and poetry; and other letters and poems. Volume II contains the Gemma Ecclesiastica a manual for the parish priests of Wales which presents a true and vivid picture of the Welsh clergy in the 13th century. Volume III contains the first four books of the Invectionum libelli a merciless attack on Giraldus' enemies; the De Menevensi ecclesia dialogus written for Stephen Langton on the Welsh clergy; and the Vita St. David. Volume V contains the Topographia Hibernica and the Expugnatio Hibernica. The former is the result of Giraldus' visits to Ireland; his account of Irish history is unreliable but the work is valuable for his observations of natural history. He records his own acute observations on the animals of Ireland in addition to recounting traditional medieval legends on them. The Expugnatio is poetical book of prophesy. This likely refers to John Teague Thain Jr. 1866-1905 who was born in Willard Box Elder Utah lived in Swansea Glamorgan Wales in 1901 and died in Logan Utah. The Thain family is featured in the book "From Amroth to Utah" by Roscoe Howells. Flake 1783. In this edition will be found a metrical index which the book formerly did not contain. This feature will be especially valuable to choirs. A few hymns have also been added to the end of the volume. 100889The sketches range between 100-140 mm high and 70-90 mm wide two are smaller; they are mounted in five roughly straight lines with their names and regional addresses or rural industry employers added in ballpoint pen to the mount. It is behind glass in its original and appropriately rustic white-painted wooden frame external dimensions 770 × 970 mm visible image size 595 × 800 mm. There is a Royal Easter Show Art Prize Exhibitions label on the verso identifying the artist as Frank F. Forster 10 Walker Ave Narrabeen. The asking price on the label was $100 indicating it was exhibited on this occasion after the introduction of decimal currency February 1966 but it looks earlier perhaps 1940s-50s: just count the hats!. Whether this was the artist's intention or whether it is indeed a product of an earlier time we cannot say but it certainly hits the spot. These are not just caricatures they are clearly characters presumably mates of Bushwaka himself: Cunningham Henderson of Casino; O.O.H. Dangar of Narrandera; C.J. Chisholm of Khancoban; A.H. Jeffreys and D.H. McKay of Delegate; Bert Parkes of Collarenabri; Mick Raleigh and Jack Watts of Wagga; E.H. Turner of Gunning . and on it goes. Cunningham Henderson died at the age of 89 in December 1954; although he is depicted as an elderly gentleman in this group portrait there is no sense of 'In Memoriam' about it. The last word on the subject goes to Year Book Australia 2000 page 447: 'Prosperity in the wool industry peaked in 1950-51 when the average greasy wool price reached 144.19 pence per pound'. unknown

Manuscript letter inquiring of the Holywell Workhouse Union in Holywell Wales as to whether it has a "surplus of agricultural labourers" as "my house has received an order from the Government of New South Wales to send out a considerable number". The letter was first sent to Newelyn Loyd of Denbigh from an unnamed but "most respectable commercial house. at Liverpool". He copies it here and forwards it to the "Guardians/or Secretary of the Holywell Union Holywell". On the inside folds Loyd explains that he thought it might be acceptable for the Guardians to place some of the occupants on the path to New South Wales by assisted passage. It is postmarked St. Asaph Oc 3 1838. <br /> <br /> The text continues with the terms - a Bounty presumably for the workhouse which would finance the journey; the labourers to pay L 2-3 and provide clothing etc. At Sydney "immediate employment at liberal wages: houses - specimen wages for different occupations "with rations for themselves & families" weekly "One peck of Wheat or 10 lbs of seconds four - Ten pounds of beef or mutton tea sugar. " It states "In ten days we dispatch one vessel and another will succeed her in a month. Shepherds Agricullurists sic Gardeners &c have been engaged at wages varying from L25 to L50 and in some cases for the superior Class as high as L80 to L100 per annum. Carpenters Masons Sawyers &c may obtain L2-2 to L2-10/ per week in Sydney. "<br /> <br /> 4 leaves 7 1/4 x 9" period folds slt separation central fold. Thick folio a splendid copy with generous margins on large paper in a fine period binding of crimson straight-grained morocco all edges gilt sides panelled in gilt with greek key borders spine panelled in gilt with green leather label. <p><p>A magnificent copy of an officer's vade-mecum the who's who of the British army at a moment in time and as the entire list of British Army officers in 1807 the crucial bible for issues of promotion and preferment as well as location and secondment. This issue is of note for including a breakdown of the officers of the New South Wales Corps p. 311 serving under Colonel Francis Grose the roll call of familiar names beginning with Grose Paterson Foveaux and Johnstone spelled thus.</p> <p>Such publications were sometimes bound in magnificent style as here but do not often survive in this sort of perfect condition.</p> </p> . Quarto x 64 pages with an illustration plus 8 plates but lacking the colour frontispiece called for by Dornbusch. Modern binder's cloth with the front panel of the original green wrapper printed in red mounted on the front board; text block tide-marked near the head of the spine with the plates a little stained; some discolouration and foxing heavy in places; minor signs of age and use; a decent copy of an absolute rarity. This history of these two cavalry units from their foundation through to the end of the Boer War is 'undoubtedly a regimental record but it is something more - it is an attempt to explain and to some extent combat the unreasoning prejudice which has grown up as a result of the South African campaign against the cavalry arm of the service. On this point Mr. Wilkinson says:- "It is my purpose to show not only that cavalry regiments like the New South Wales Lancers have done equal yeoman service to the Empire in the South African struggle with their comrades in the other branches of the service but that they have done infinitely more as the pioneers of the cavalry movement in Australia to enhance the value of our defence force and to shew the world of what fighting stuff our men are made"' from a review in the 'Daily Telegraph' 12 October 1901. 1883213731883. Albumen cabinet card with original photograph of the Australian station now located in the township called Barooga. Photograph on card with printed border the title written in pencil on verso. A small station house is visible at the right side of the image with a long wooden fence bordering the river. <br /> <br /> The area which later became Boomanoomana Station was first settled in the early 1800’s by Colonel Henry Gwynne who arrived there in the footsteps of Charles Sturt. By 1863 the station got its name when William Hay acquired 80000 acres. The property extended from Corowa in the east to Tuppal Station in the west and was quite wooded therefore suitable for cattle. But Hay wanted to establish a sheep station so he sold off his cattle cleared the trees at great effort and fenced the land purchasing merino sheep from established stations. Hay built a homestead which still stands; it was owned by Sir David Hay 1916 - 2009 head of Aboriginal Affairs Administrator of Papua New Guinea and Ambassador to the UN who restored the grounds and buildings to original condition. <br /> 3 1/2 x 6 1/2" image on card 4 1/2 x 6 1/2". Markham was heavily involved in the exportation of merinos to Australia. He convinced Australian wool growers that introducing American merinos into the Australia flock would increase their weight and this was very successful. The purchaser here is Alfred Hay 1846 - 1918 the son of William Hay who established Boomanoomana Station. Alfred Hay became sole owner of Boomanoomana Station in 1886 after the dissolution of the partnership between his father himself and brother. Boomanoomana Station at the time consisted of 33000 acres of freehold and about 5000 acres of Crown lands.<br /> <br /> Markham was mentioned in many articles about Australian wool growing. In the "Pacific Rural Press" Volume 36 Number 24 15 December 1888 it reads: "We imagine it was this large purchase of sheep by Mr. Samuel McCaughey which started that genial globetrotter in the sheep interest Mr. W. G. Markham of Western New York on a pleasure trip to Australia last summer. Mr. Markham made us a call in California on his way out but did not disclose his business. We imagine that he went to see if there were any more sheep buyers like Mr. McCaughey in Australia and turn their attention to the flock of Western New York as well as to those of the Green Mountain State. It might not be amiss for some of our California breeders to Blip over to the Island continent just to see how things are over there." Samuel McCaughey of Melbourne was reputed to be the owner of a million sheep and one of the most influential wool producers in Australia. <br /> <br /> The pedigree published in New York 1883. 17 pp text with a fold-out pedigree of Ranzin 464. An upended table in the foreground has scattered books entitled Magna Charta sic; Declaration of Rights; Hanover Succession; Claim of Rights;Journals of the House. <br /> <br /> Platemark 14 1/2 X 10 5/8" with margins. Etching a later impression ca. 1850 numbered 178 in the top right corner with a partial caricature image on the verso. Slightly toned along top edge otherwise bright and clean a strong impression.
